As a max user i was wondering if anyone here has used Modo and silo with max? And which one do you prefer over the other and why. Thanks
Max_Modo_Silo
Well it depends what you are doing…max is awsome for games, and has many availible plugins and a built in renderer, and animation package…i could go on and on
…silo is not personally for me (my opinion not fact)
…and modo is amazing at modelling for film and pre-rendered stuff, it could also be used for game modelling
…Its uv editing is not the greatest in the world. but it has some good modelling tools, and is built very well and has a very good future. And its subdivisions are very good…Not to mention the UI.
I’ve used all 3 in a game development studio. They all have great polygon tools, which is what it all comes down to when you’re modeling. Each has it’s own tools and little workflow strengths and weaknesses that set them apart. Likewise for film… if you are doing polygon modeling… it doesn’t matter - all 3 are good at this. Obviously max is more capable when it comes to UV editing, lighting, rendering etc because it is a full 3d solution. The other two are dedicated modelers.
There’s no point in bean counting what makes one app better than the others though. This always comes down to personal preference in the end, and that is only something you can obtain through using them all and making your own judgements. What works for me doesn’t necessarily work for you, yadda yadda yadda…
Since I am not qualified to make an unbiassed comment on modo modeling
here are a couple quotes from games artists that we work with:
“Modo has streamlined my workflow, as well as making everyday tasks a more enjoyable experience. The customizable interface allows me to work in a way that is unique to my needs.”
Aaron Smith
3D Artist, Epic Games creators of Unreal Tournament
“I’m in love with modo! The UI/hotkey/macro system is exactly what I’ve always wanted. The tool-pipe, SDS n-gon and creasing support also go to the top of my “favorite features” list. I actually really enjoy trying to come up with new workflow shortcuts, whether it be through macro, Perl script, or popup windows.”
Seneca Menard
3D Artist, ID Software creators of DOOM 3
Hope that helps…
