Tnx for the tuts…haven’t checked them out yet (will do that first thing tomorrow) but i already installed quicktime just so i would be able to watch it (normally my allegiance lays to mediaplayer so switching sides means allot :D) but one tiny question: Are these tutorials good for people with older versions, or will i - halfway through each tut - discover that a certain button doesn’t exist making me go all catatonic? So i have 3ds max 6 instead of 3ds max 8. I kinda bought an older cheap version…an upgrade or buying a new version would force me in not eating for months…so that wasn’t an option :stuck_out_tongue:

#31

thanks for checking them out. The 101 series should transfer well into the older versions, but those with associated files are saved for v7. So, you may run into some problems there. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Cheers

E.

For those of you that haven’t checked out Eric’s great site, you’re missing out!

You should also download and install the FREE VLC player to watch these vids. Much better than Quicktime IMO.

grab it here:

Eric unselfishly donates a lot of time/effort and also has just released 3 or 4 more videos in the last week alone.
The one series on using splines to model a face is awesome.

p.s.
I love that site!

Hey :stuck_out_tongue: Very busy with watching (and memorising  ) your awesome tuts, yet i’ve run into a tiny problem. As i have mentioned before i use 3ds max 6 and in the seventh 101 tutorial which covers polygons and the edit poly function. Well ‘edit poly’ cannot be found in my modifier list…i kinda tried to use ‘edit mesh’ because you also have those vertices and face options etc. but at a certain point when you get deeper into those edit poly functions i can’t continue…could this function be found under a different name or should i just ignore it (or will i miss some hefty important basics if i do so)

Tnx allot :stuck_out_tongue: and euhm sorry to steal several minutes of your life

#34

Thanks for the plug, Hooper.

As for an EditPoly equivalent in v6…not really. You can get some of the same functionality from an old set of scripts which I think was called MeshTools. Unfortunately, most of the options in EditPoly were added in v7.

Ahhh k, tnx, very much appreciate the dedication you put into this.

Ooh and btw, when I try to open the file used in the render tutorial I get some ‘missing dlls’ error…does this mean i’m missing a certain plug-in? :stuck_out_tongue: or is it plainly because i’m using inferior software? Or because the universe is conspiring against me? All very valid reasons, really.

#36

Happy to give something back. The missing DLLs are a nasty little bug that occurs when using custom renderers on older versions of Max. I use Brazil for many of my renderings and it got stuck deep in the file. Just click through it and you’ll be fine.

#37

K tnx for the feedback.

By the way. There seems to be a problem with tutorial 15 (UV-coordinates or something like that is the title) When i try to open it there comes an error (all the other tuts work perfectly fine so i don’t think i’m doing something wrong  )

#38

What error are you seeing? Worked fine over here.

#39

#15 worked fine for me. I’m about to start #17! w00t! I love these dang things! Everything I can see and it’s all the same on my screen and I feel that I’ve already learned more just doing these than I did when I spent a year at UAT. Then again, the past few days I’ve dedicated about 6 hours a day doing these tutorials and playing around with the program.

Might also add that the UVW Map puzzle was getting frustrating after a few mins! But I got it.

#40

Hmm strange…i’ll try to download it again in the morning…it was some error said like…

ERROR -2041 or something like that…can’t really check right now, it’s on another computer -.- this one is too slow to run Max and the one which can run Max isn’t connected to our prescious world wide web.

Anyway, I love these tutorials too…i really like learning Max…yet the more time i spend learning it the more I start to sence that I’ll like err…never be skilled enough to do what everyone else here is doing, lol :stuck_out_tongue:

#41

Hehe, seems like there’s nothing wrong with the file anyway.

I don’t know how it happened, but for some strange reason my video file was only 139kB large, so that couldn’t be right  . I’ve just downloaded it again and it works fine. Yipie!

The only sad thing is that I can’t use a single one of those .max files :’( isn’t there some sort of convertor i could download?

#42

hehe…yah, sounds like your download just got cut off. Happy to hear it’s now working. As for the files…next weekend I might be revisiting some of these and see if FBX file format will work for distribution with older versions of Max. If so, I’ll let you know or just keep an eye on EGo Lounge for updates. (where the videos are hosted)

Hey, i’ve got a rather silly question here
I’ve been busy learning Max for the past few weeks (kinda started reading 2 books too because i’ve only got 100 more mb of download capacity before i switch to smallband :’( )

And now i’m wondering:

When i look at the forum, most (like 100%) of the 3d art created uses more then 1 program. For example ‘ZBrush’. I looked ZBrush up in google etc. and found out it’s some 2.5d program which can be used in conjunction with for example 3ds max. Well, what is the use? Should i first spend many more months/years mastering Max before I look into that or has it got immediate benifits? For example: If people use this program to texture their objects then would it be a waste of time to learn how to do it in Max?

Maybe a bad example but that’s kinda what I would like to know. Should i be way more advanced in Max before i trouble myself learning another piece of software or could learning it like save time in the long run?

(Ooh and btw, is it a good thing to always make your objects out of one piece (using attach or collapse or whatever) or is that troublesome for texturing/animating?)

I’m kinda cautious about all of this because i’m scared of messing everything up during the learning process  Please forgive me!

quite a few questions that could easily fill several pages because it “depends.” Since you’re just starting, don’t worry about all the other packages out there and just try to get comfortable with one. Once you fully understand modeling, animation, texturing, etc. then start looking at how other packages may help you create your artistic vision quicker or more efficiently. For example, ZBrush is often used as a “detailing pass” on geometry. you model a basic object in Max, bring it into ZBrush for hires sculpting, then export special maps that preserve this detail when bringing the model back into Max. Since you’re not at this stage yet, don’t worry about it. too many people think they need to learn all of these different packages/techniques right away without any reason other than someone else used it to create some cool image/animation. Focus on Max until you’re comfortable with the basics and you can successfully take an idea and put it in pixels. Then start expanding your arsenal to include other packages that may make your life a little less painful or a little more creative.

And don’t worry about “messing up”, messing up is the learning process.

Hi,

I cannot log in to your new website. I forgot my old password and started the automated process of getting it changed. I have a snag in that I my mail server has blocked the second email with the temp password and I therefore am unable to proceed any further with the process.

I emailed you via this site as there seems to be no way to contact you on the Ego Lounge site unless I am logged in.

I hope you get this and I apologize for interrrupting this thread with this problem…but I did not know of any other way to reach you.

Thanks

Login troubles resolved and actually a few new tutorials posted. Enjoy!
