Comments and description:

This was my first serious project using Blender (v2.49), and my first modelling work after an almost year long hiatus. As it’s always the case in these great challenges, I learned a lot, and had a great time seeing the amazing skills of the other challengers, specially the organic modellers and sculptors.
When I decided to enter this challenge, being a fan of all things airplane/airship/spaceship, my options were narrowed to Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop and Porco Rosso.
I already did some Macross fanwork (as can be seen in my avatar), so that was out. Cowboy Bebop was also out after I couldnt find any good/consistent reference for Spike’s Swordfish.
So Porco Rosso it was; at first doing a diorama was only an option, but as work on the plane progressed, I started to ponder my options for the diorama.
That was a really hard choice to make, there’s so many great scenes and enviroments in the movie…
In the end, my inexperience in Blender made my decide to create a diorama depicting Porco’s plane inside the Piccolo workshop the night before he and Fio escape from the secret police.
I plan to finish this piece, adding textures and proper lighting, with so many different materials and objects, I think it would be a good learning tool.

Well, that's it, I wont bore you anylonger, big thanks to all who encouraged me and suggested ways to improve the scene.

Glad to see you back Roberto.
Everything done in ZBrush and Lightwave. First time using ZB 4r2b (4r3 came out during the challenge) and first time using LW11 which means I finally got to use GoZ. Holy cow I had no idea what I've been missing this whole time. Simple stuff that is so tricky in ZB I can knock out in a flash in LW and click GoZ, back in business again. Love it love it. My next challenge now will be bringing the ZB scene into LW to render. ZB renderer is good but not quite there yet.

Thanks to nsb, I was going to cop-out with a fairly basic scene but after seeing your entry I decided to step it up. Great challange with some really fantastic work on a topic I love.
Good luck everyone.

WIP THREAD

COMMENTS & DESCRIPTION :

This project is fully done with Autodesk Maya.

Since the very beginning, i knew i wanted to do this model. Every time i’ve felt running out of inspiration, Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, one way or another, has found the key to find it again. I love almost every work from this director, and if this works as some kind of honoring, i definitely wanted to do it.

Upon everything, i’ve had so much fun and i’ve learnt a lot from my own in each process of this work. I think i couldn’t resist the idea of participating in a contest in which i could express my love to this movie (Spirited Away), which is always so inspiring for me. This work took time and patience to be done, but it is always nice to see the results of some effort. I want to say thanks just for having created this awesome challenge which actually took me out of the usual “you can’t do it”. From now on i will try and participate in more contests, thanks to this one. Well, i wrote more of my impressions of how the process was in the WIP thread… i just want to say that at this point, i don’t really care if i win or not, i can only think that i gave a result, and that is the first of the steps. I’ve had fun and i met nice people thanks to this challenge, so again, It was a pleasure being part of it.

(PS: I am glad that the accident wasn’t that serious and your wife is OK Roberto, thanks for being here and opening the thread even in this situation!)

Heya everyone,

Alot of fun creating these girls, getting the style right is really challenging in 3d/to look good at all angles.

Thx to all who commented and critic and congrats on the great work from the others.

Artist: Vincent Wan - TItle: Deunan Knute II
The beauty render plus all the required Ortho views.

About this project:

> 100% Zbrush

> Time taken; not more than 60+ hours

> Free-flow modeling technique, no references (except for Vader’s head and lightsaber);
think it then model it.

The Concept:

Deunan cyborged after near-death encounter with new arch-villians, she barely survives only because of Briareos’ self-sacrifice to save her from certain death.

The time is set 20 years after Briareos’ death and Deunan is now supremo defender of Olympus City, a promise made to the dying Briareos.

THe Evil Galactic Empire reaches this part of the universe in their quest for conquest.

UNfortunately for Lord Vader, he has met his match in the form of the Cyborged Deunan; but has the Emperor now found his latest and deadliest Apprentice?

My thoughts on the Beauty Render:

The render utilizes a TRiangular and Diamond compositional scheme, so that the character is anchored solidly and the focus is led to the face where the viewer’s gaze is transfixed.

You will see many triangular and diamond forms within the image, the model has been designed with this end pose in mind.

DEunan is left white while her supporting parts are left in shades of grey with Darth Vader in black and his lightsaber black and white. This will emphasize the purity of Deunan against the Evil of Vader.

However, the tension of the saga is achieved with the Black and white lightsaber in Deunan’s hand, a visual psychological technique to make one wonder; will this symbol of Vader’s struggle against Good and Evil now transfer to Deunan, will it strengthen her or destroy her?

Starwars Trivia: This is the reason why Lucas designed Vader to be totally black and his Lightsaber black and white, to symbolise Vader’s struggle against Good and Evil raging in his soul.

It has been a fun HCM. THanks for watching the development of this character inspired by the Appleseed Saga.

Edit: For those wondering why the gun has no holster, but looks like it is just stuck to the leg belt in haste, it is not so.

The gun is held in place by my idea of a Bio-Magnetic Lock plate. The gun instantly releases when Deunan’s cyborg hand embedded with her DNA signature grasps the gun’s butt.

The LOck plate then remains in an “un-Magnitised” state until the gun is brought into contact again. Much like how your parking ticket knows whether the ticket’s been paid or not.

This way my weapons remain exposed in all their loveliness, rather than half-hidden in a holster. What can I say? I love my work…

Final:

Beauty Render High Resolution 1200x1600

Orthos:

Side

Front

Side

Back

Bottom

Top

Software used : Blender 3D 2.62 and Sculptris Alpha 6

Approximated time spent: Started from the 7th of February till 14th of March 2012. Spent like 2 to 3 hours on weekdays and around 4 to 5 hours on weekends when able. Around 80 odd hours in total.

I have always wanted to do a Cowboy Bebop fanart since it’s one of my favorite anime of all times. This challenge gave me the opportunity to do so by pushing me to meet a deadline.

My approach to the fanart was to revisualise Spike as a more ‘realistic’ character. So i gave him more ‘realistic’ proportions and took some liberties with the shoe and hair design.

Not really happy with the final product but happy that i finished none the less… Will probably tweak this after the challenge and include Faye in a mini diorama…

Truly learned a lot from entering this challenge and hopefully i can improve in the months to come.

The inital concept was for Chihiro to be riding Haku but time got away from me and I had to abandon that idea. Instead I’m submitting an Haku bust. This is my first time participating in this sort of thing. I did the base mesh in 3DS Max and the detailing and rendering in zbrush. I estimate roughly 8 hours total for the two models.

ZBrush kept crashing when I tried to merge more than 80 Subtools for the Omu to display the complete wireframe, hence the full scene wires above are only partial.

WIP THREAD: [HCM 33: Masters of Anime - Hayao Miyazaki - Nausicaä](http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=7274221#post7274221)

COMMENTS & DESCRIPTION: Inspiration for this work was the movie poster claimed to be Miyazaki-sensei's own personal favorite. As indicated by the color of the little Omu's eyes, I aimed for a little bit of a different mood than the original poster though. I had big plans for this, but started too late, tried too many new things, had too many other things to do and too many things went plain wrong during the final phase, so there's a lot of fudged/unfinished components here. No excuses though, things are as they are. See the WIP-Thread for more info and images. Time to move on to other projects. lol

Great work and entries everybody!:buttrock:

Title: briareos
Author: Masamune Shirow
Software: Maya,Photoshop,Zbrush,After Effect

I like this character (briareos) because he is a cyborg but he still has human mind.

COMMENTS & DESCRIPTION

I might edit this later to add my reasons for making specific decisions, but simply put, my overall goal was to make a realistic Kaneda, from Akira, while attempting to hold true to the stylistic intentions of the original character.

“The cursed Prince”. Miyazaki Hayao Princess Mononoke (Diorama)

Software used : Autodesk Softimage 2012 and Zbrush 4R2

Approximated time spent: Started February the 5th and Ended March the 14th of 2012. I dedicated from 2 to 3 hours after work and 5 to 6 on Saturdays. 50 hours in total.

This is my favourite animated movie of all times. I was very inspiring for me and helped me to start a career in animation. I love all Ghibli animated movies but Miyazaki Hayao's movies are truly special.

I feel like I've ruined the appealing of the character making it to 3D, sorry Master (Miyazaki). Is an incomplete piece but I will finish it for sure. The sculpture needs more work in general but it's been impossible to me to put more time in this.

Congratulations to all challengers, great level in general and I hope you've enjoyed like I have.

Hi this is Masahiro. It’s already 3 hours after the Friday deadline, but let me post my latest progress in this modeling challenge.

Artist: Masahiro Mizutani - TItle: Gunship

About this project:

Modeling software: 3DS max

Work hour: about 25 hours

This is based on the gunship from Miyazaki’s classic anime “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” It was really hard for me to admit that I couldn’t complete this within the deadline. I will keep posting my latest modeling within my WIP thread. It was fun to join this challenge though, I hope I can join for the next challenge and finish it.
