Master and Servant 3D Entry: Tim Laning
First of all, welcome to my Master and Servant thread. I start at this competition bearing in mind that I probably do not have the skillset to complete it with an end result that will stagger your breath, but I hope at the very least to deliver a concept that will portray human despair, and a complex relationship between the so-called master and his servant.
I have always wanted to create a rendering of a scene in the Victorian style of, for instance Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s 1895 oil painting “A Coign of Vantage”. The depiction of human misery has also been high on my wish-list, and allthough I’m not a star at modeling humans (let alone their physical and facial expression) I think this cg talk challenge is a fine way of getting acquainted with all the necessary techniques. I will take one of my favorite Ilja Repin paintings as an inspiration for the human interaction aspects for my scene: “Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan”, depicting Ivan holding the lifeless body of his son, after he has taken an iron bar to his head in a sudden act of rage. The expression in the eyes of Ivan the Terrible is one of despair and utter regret. A very haunting image.
I will make a scene taking place in ancient Rome, in the courtyard of a Roman villa, with a man (the master) having very recently been slain by his servant, who stilll holds the bloodied dagger in regret, and has just been discovered by the master’s younger daughter. I wish the expressions of the human characters to tell a story that can be explained in different ways, and let the audience guess at the motive for the murder, and the complex triangular relation between the master, his servant and the daughter.
Looking foward to see your work, don’t be shy we’re here to give you advice if you need it.
