Master and Servant 3D Entry: Mike Lambert
Hi everyone. I’ve been pretty busy the last couple of days, but I should have some sketches to post when I get home from work tonight. I’m a little unsure if my concept will be clear enough, so hopefully you guys will be able to help me clarify it.
Thanks.
Here’s my first concept drawing.

The drawing is not a masterpiece by any means, but then, I don’t claim to be able to draw well anyways
I plan on cleaning up the concept image using Illustrator. I’ll post that when it’s ready.
I will be using 3D Studio MAX 6, and Brazil for this scene.
The idea I’m going for should be pretty obvious, but I’d like to explain more about it. Parents are always telling their children not to sit too closely to the TV, or not to watch too much cause it will rot your brain. My idea for this scene is to have this cartoon-stylised character sitting in front of the TV, just glaring at it. His mind has been phsyically rotted away by sitting in front of the TV for so long, and now for all intents and purposes he is a mindless zombie, obeying the TV. Master = TV, Servant = Kid. After I drew up the initial concept (the one posted above) I realised something. The kid is holding a remote, which controls the TV. So if you look at it that way, the kid is the master and the TV his servant. A nice little twist thrown in there.
What I want to accomplish with this image:
-I want to get across that the character is totally enslaved by the TV, almost like if the TV goes off, he has no reason to live. (TV = Master, Kid = Servant) That image I don’t think will be a problem to accomplish.
-I’d also like to show the Kid = Master, TV = Servant relationship too. This one I think will be harder to pull off.
The scene:
- I’m going for a rundown late 50’s, early 60’s style room. I want it to look like this guy has neglected everything around him, and because of that, the house is starting to fall apart. Dirt, dust, spider-webs, garbage, all of those I want to add to the scene.
-The main source of light will be from the TV, and it will be illuminating pretty much just the character and his immediate surroundings. It will be a colder coloured light. I also want to have a couple small fill lights from the sides of the frame which will cast a warmer coloured light.
-For the texturing I plan on going for a cartoon-realism sort of feel. The textures will have realistic elements in them, but should be obvious that I’m not going for photo-realism.
-One thing I want to try to work into the scene (and this might require a change in composition) I want to show that there is just static on the TV. I think this will help sell the Kid = Servant relationship. Even though there’s absolutely nothing on TV worth watching, he’s still glued to it.
What I’m looking for:
Right now I’d like any and all suggestions on how I can improve this scene. Given what I’ve said above, do you have any ideas on how I can incorporate some of those elements into the scene?
Thanks for taking the time to look at my work.
