I am entering both the 2d and 3d. I intend to finish both this time around. Please critique everything, I need help, this is only my second attempt at one of these contests and I learned alot from the GSO. Hope to have some sketches, ideas by end of the week!

Started throwing out ideas would like feedback on direction, as I have tons of ideas but have trouble narrowing the view so to speak.

a) Little gremlin like creature torqueing on a motor under the hood of a car, looking back at the mechanic with a ā€œam I doing goodā€ sorta look. Mechanic is big hairy man…

b) Play with the relationship between performer and audience. At times the fans are master to ther performer and vica versa.

c) General and troops in battle, probably in a retro-futuristic sorta style. Kind of like ā€œSky Captain and the World of Tomorrowā€.

d) Same as C but the view is of two generals playing chess or risk with soldiers as game pieces.

e) Evil, Cold ultra - biotch, looking snidely down on a withered little old man.

f) The uber-coach potato lounging in front of his master (The TV)

So which direction should I go? Or should I come up with more?

I really liked the (b)audience one…but how will you show it???

I have thought about the audience/performer relationship quite abit. Started with the GSO and doing an Opera on a big stage being done by aliens. Never went anywhere with it but the whole fan vs star relationship is interesting. Not sure how it could be shown effectively. I imagine for the performers role it would all be in the eyes. Probably a group of fans reaching onto stage trying to pull in the star. The star with obvious charisma/swagger but terror in his eyes.

I’m not very good at subtle so this is by far the most difficult idea I’ve come up with, which might make it worth it.

In the 2d part I am definately going with the chess match… All though maybe I should do the chess match for the 3d and the performer bit for the 2d as I am better with the 2d and could definately show the expressed idea…

Ideas?

The topic ā€œtarget audience and performerā€ looks fine to me. It could be very interesting and you can show lots of expressions via that. For the chess concept: maybe you remember of the Harry Potter’s ā€œwizard chessā€ (am not sure about the title, coz i’ve seen the hungarian language version). I think you have to do more refinement on chess idea, but the root is excellent.

I am doing the chess match for the 3d and the audience performer for the 2d. Atleast for now. Will be submitting first character sketch shortly.

#8

One of the two generals to be playing chess. Hard as nails, unrelenting ā€œOld Schoolā€ hard ass.

Nice sketch, I liked the eyes, they are so great

Good luck

afaik you can’t go with the same topic in the 2d and in the 3d challenge, but I might be wrong. Anyway the sketch is very cool!

Yes you are correct, in the 3d I will be doing the generals playing chess, in the 2d I will be doing the Audience and performer. Feels like I am biting off alot but I am sure I can get it done. I am going to focus on the 3d first as it will take the longest for me. Probably begin the 2d once I have the full concept worked out, sketched and ready for modeling of the 3d.

He has the basic look but the details are wrong. he needs a more ā€œGreekā€ nose, maybe it has been broken a few times in bar brawls. Eyes aren’t small enough. I want him to look more predator and less human, more characature. The whole scene is a characature of reality so might as well make it part of the style…

Little stuck on the setting. There is a battle raging around them, but in what setting do they play. A bombed out building? A Tent? Deck of an aircraft carrier? I’m thinking a bombed out cathedral could be very interesting, goes with the supposed morality of the image as well. Not sure what a bombed out cathedral looks like. I can see a priest, or acolyte trying to keep order in the disaster of the ruined hall of worship, maybe another one trying to keep out a group of soldiers. Meanwhile planes dogfight overhead, viewable through the remnants of a once great cieling. Tanks and soldiers rumble by broken stained glass windows and shattered walls.

But now how do I tie the chess game back to the soldiers, tanks and planes in the surrounding conflict? Holograms are an interesting idea, but don’t go with the style I see coming together. Puppet strings? Giant hands coming from the sky? Suggestions please…

I am starting the cathedral/bombed out city sketches… This is going to be a HUGE project!
