Hello Everyone.
I’m writing this because I feel I should begin with something in this competition. As it stands, I’ve only managed to come up with a vivid concept in my head. Even the composition is a little sketchy, but I know what I want. Let me try to describe it because my sketching is illegible.
It’ll be called Magister Sierra and her Clockwork Guardian. I imagine a rotunda of columns surrounding a place of worship. It’s roughly 20 meters in diameter, with the focal point where the Magister teaches. She’s an elderly woman who knows the ways of the world better than anyone at the monastery. She’s defended by a stalwart clockwork golem passed on to her at the death of the previous Magister. He’s a mechanical giant roughly 2x her height. (His modeling and inspiration will come from pre-digital machinery- tractors, engines, locomotives, and clocks). He should be depicted in an inquisitive posture- learning from the Magister. She’ll by talking happily and illustrating a crucial detail with her hands. I’m expecting the use of a bright transparency-mapped schematic that will detail a small portion of the meaning of life. A big inspiration for this focal point of the image will come from Stephan Martiniere’s earlier work. I want it to glow, as if in mid-air. There will probably be one more monk in the background meditating, but other than that this is between the two of them.
The details will of course follow in the image. Right now I’m at work, so I can’t really explain my progress thus far. I’m currently working on some lighting/texturing combinations, but they’re subject to change as per my judgment and that of this renowned community. I’d like to point out that the above description is mostly for my own self-direction and to give anyone reading this a sense of what I’m trying to do.
I don’t want to lose this idea.
What I’m hoping to get across in this image is a rather unique relationship between these two entities. One is a massive body that lacks the insight into mortal existence, which only a frail human body can provide. He is still capable, however, of the human emotion of curiosity and still wants to learn about the meta-physical aspects of the universe. He’s escaping the routine clockwork nature of his construction. Perhaps he even wants to be a Magister some day! It may seem that the two are so contrasted on almost every level that their Master/Servant relationship is almost made meaningless. However, I think that through careful artistic representation, I’m going to make it so that the master/servant relationship is heightened by these sharp differences (On the most physical level, the guardian is bound to the Magister mentally [and dare I say, emotionally] rather than physically via chains or weapons).
On a side note, I’m entering this contest (despite finals coming up) for two reasons. First, to test my skill level at this time and see how my very best measures up compared to that of the rest of the CG elite. Second, I’m working on a decrepit PC system that’s in desperate need of improvement. Those prizes look especially tantalizing when you’re waiting eight minutes for an unfiltered, unmapped light test to come through. Hahaha!
Good luck to all, and I’m hoping to get some strong critique from this talented and insightful community.
