Latest Update: Coloring WIP: light and shade
being a bit bolder with the light and dark: I realise that i’m being a bit timid, and in an image like this, it requires more aggression… so I’m being firmer with it, but still there’s a bit of a way to go… I’m also toyinh with the idea of removing the planets…
I’ve been working on a series of designs as an ongoing project, taking me years actually, but it keeps me quiet… and one of those designs seems to have all the elements that the “master and servant” demands That card is the Devil, which in tarot terms isn’t quite as sinister as the name implies, so don’t think of this as Satan… it’s merely a demonic figure. Obviously i’m going to be making a few alterations to it, maybe just the one imp, remove any offending nudity on the demon figure, and take out all references to the tarot idea, but I thought I’d post this as a starting point… and good luck to all!

Um… why remove the nudity? Seems relevant to the image and I dont see anything offensive about it.
Nice strong image, very coherent. I like the flat/not flat thing. Could be even more extreme even.
thank you for the kind words, and so quickly too. I must admit I’m not worried by the bare breastedness. The figure in tarot terms is also supposed to have the male genitalia, but it didn’t feel right even for the card… I’ll see what feels right as I go along.
I was thinking about maybe giving “it” a more dominatrixy style of attire…
as for the flat an not flat , well the intention is to give a more 3d photrealistic feel though I’m not sure that my abilities are that far advanced yet, the planets in the background are actually photos so I need to work them down to the same level as the the forground forms, and also a dd a sense of distance and perspective. They are Saturn and Mercury because that’s the lore of the card, but for this competition, they can become something fictional - a bonus because it means I can pull the colours together to make the picture more uniform in its colour scheme and style.
There’s still a long way to go, but I’m glad you like the concept. thanks… love yours by the way, very powerful.
just doing some character work on the little guy’s face… interesting expression that he has… happy? contented? after all why should a servant be miserable?, I do kind of like his mischievous look though… he’s definitely planning something!
again, more face work, I’m thinking I need to be a bit more aggressive with my contrasts in shading, although “it’s” going to be very pale in the face in comparison to the red body, there needs to be a much stronger light/dark contrast to make the image work! i also want a sense of power to come from the eyes, so I’ve removed the iris and pupils, and just put in flat yellow… doesn’t do it for me though… anyway… onwards!

more seriously,i like her overall design,but i wud like to see a more dynamic pose and angle for this image.i wish i cudda replied earlier in ur progress…sorry.

ok if you read back on my earlier description, you’ll see I never used the word her… I referred to “it”, reason being is that this has its roots in “the devil” tarot card. the devil in that card exhibits both male and female characteristics… hence the breasts and the “bulge” in “that” area. It also has some very masculine musculature, the face is very feminine, it has breasts yes, but it has narrow hips and some seriously chunky thighs…
so the fact that you’re getting confused over gender means the design’s worked.
as for the pose, I want this character to be in a position of power… It doesn’t need to do anything more dynamic because, why should it? Think return of the Jedi, when Vader and Luke are having their lightsabre fight… the Emporer sat in the background, and did nothing… he was most definitely the master. and that “nothing” said more about his confidence in his own power than if he’d ave shot bolts intyo the battle… ultimately the plan is to have “plasma ball” style glows coming from both hands. I’m gonna have to submit the line art at some point to fulfill that competition requirement… when I find my original sketches, hopefully that’ll get more across of what I want to get.

experimenting with various tones of redand orange, and adding highlights and lowlights to make the master’s body more powerful, including the start of the energy hands…

I’ve ammended the plinth, to make it stonier and give it better structure, and also started working with the fire and the light and shadoows that it’s casting on the main characters.
I’m still not sure whether to keep the two slaves, or just limit it to one; having two does give a nice balance to the design…
and while there’s still a very long way to go, I can see the end ijn sigfht (for once)
Looking good. One suggestion: perhaps the feet on the two little devils should be level behind each other (on the flat plane that is).
From the way that you write I would guess that you also know a lot about the tarot.
thanks for the comments Jack, regarding the tarot… yeah I’ve learnt a fair bit about them having done some extensive research into what each card should have in it, which planets they are influenced by, what starsigns rule them, what their relation is to the hebrew alphabet, and how they’ve evolved over the centuries etc… but I’m very conscious that this isn’t a competition to design a card… so elements that are featured now, may well be removed as I don’t think it needs to be so “busy”…
I’ve always thought there was something wrong with the little guys’ feet and could never quite put my finger on it, probably the reason why they’re just lightly flatted in. I think you may be onto something and I’ll deal with that in the next posting…
