Can someone tell me which view they like better? I don’t like the character sketches at all, I just want to get the mood right first. Once I’ve done that, I’ll spend more than 15 minutes on the people.

Ok, it’s not a “sketch” as in a traditional B&W line drawing, but there was no line drawing for this one. I used Corel Painter to rough in the idea. I decided to do a storyboard leading up to the final drawings. When I had my first idea, the servant was to be the perfecct image of ourselves. That which is guided by our conscience, the Master being our inner demons. Here is that storyboard. As you will see, my idea changes later.
Here I was developing the idea of the inner demon further. The thought behind this one was that the conscience (to the minor dimay of the demon) has won a battle. As you can see, the demon is not REALLY that upset, as he knows there are more battles to come. The problem is that I became uninspired with this concept. The thing is… I believe that this battle is not necessary if we make the choice NOT to be controlled by our inner demons. I could elaborate, but I would rather just move on to my new idea, as will be outlined in the next WIP.
Ok, so here’s a major flip flop in the game. Here we see a tree and a treehouse, with a view from above and inside the tree. This concept is much lighter than than the first. I am a relatively new father. My son is turning two in June. What I have noticed, is that due to my undying love for my son, I am constantly being directed to do crazy things for him on a daily basis. Although I am a parent and he is my child, I have often asked myself who is the master in our relationship. In the image to come, I plan to have a father on the ladder, sweat pouring off his face, nails hanging out of his mouth, putting up the last few boards on the tree house. On the ground will be a small child, maybe Iceream cone in hand, pointing to where the spot where daddy should be concentrating his efforts. More sketches are to come.
Hey, seems like you’ve put some serious thought into your ideas. There is something that captures me with the second image. I don’t mind how “deep” into the internal struggle that it is. I’d love to see you do some more on that one. The only thing that looks out of place a little is his expression. I know you were going for “there are more inner struggles to come”, however, it is still to maddening to lose everybattle. But, alas, it is sometimes too hard to work on something that you are not inspired by.
The last image is very nice and bright. I really love the greens that you’ve used. The idea is great too. I keep picturing a small child leaning on his elbows, dreamily watching his dad complete something well wished for. It is hard to tell what you will change at this stage, but the treehouse ladder’s shadow seems a bit off? Or maybe its because you havn’t added the trees shadows in yet?

You are right about the shadow from the ladder. I am still unsure about that, because I haven’t decided what to do with the characters yet. Oh, yeah, the demon guy. You’re not the first to say that about his expression. I hate to admit this, but I guess that’s what happens when I am just winging it. The pole sticking through his chest was kind of an afterthought and I just never changed the face. You’re right on the nose about that though.

Ok, this is it for sure.
New concept. This one is actually a bit more than what it seems. As I was sketching out the little boy and mother I was getting an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. although the obvious master is the weather, and the servant; the human race, it is actually a metaphor for the storm of conflict in a relationship. I have had numerous dreams of tornado’s chasing me. Finally here we see the storm is finally taking me away from those whom I love. I fear that my son is the one who would ultimately lose. I do hope that I am able to finnish this one. Never have I felt more strongly about a piece of work.
What a fantastic idea for master and servant! Your best idea yet. Never would have thought of it. I can’t wait to see some more posts on this. I like the composition and your lighting is good too. Maybe it would be neat to see some flying pieces coming into the house (a little foreground elements that aren’t too big or distracting…?)… anywho, goodluck!
