Master and Servant 2D Entry: Einar Lunden

This is a very simple and very messy beginning sketch.

The story is about a young girl who is sick and tired of getting low grades that she feels are unfair and who finally decides to take advantage of the resources at hand, namely a very devoted monster who does whatever she asks it. The monster has been called and has just busted through the door and grabbed the girl’s teacher.

I hope the girl’s gesture might become clear enough in time, it’s supposed to show her giving the monster the signal to do whatever it wants with the teacher (which most likely means it will eat him, I suppose).

This whole thing is perhaps a bit too cartoony, though.

Men ja… hennes dødstegn var veldig vanskelig å oppdage før jeg leste beskrivelsen din. Men det er vel bare fordi det er en så grov skisse til nå… Men vet ikke… du bør undersøke avrettingstegn og sånt fra historien… I roma under gladiatorkamper ga tilskuerne tegn på om de skulle la motstanderen leve eller dø… det var tomme opp eller tommel ned. Men vet ikke hvordan det ville sett ut her da… vanskelig.

jobb mer med tegnet! Ellers kan dette bli gøy…

Thanks, guys, for your feedback so far!

I’ve worked some on the characters and tried to make it a bit tighter and clearer. This is the final line art before I start painting. Would love to hear any comments people might have. Is it too messy? Can you see what’s going on at all?

I also added a base color over the sketch that will hopefully serve to keep the piece together a little colorwise.

Working from dark to light, I start adding some color. At this point it is about half-way towards the lightest areas. Here’s a detail…

Working some more on some of the characters… Haven’t had time to do much and it’s kind of frustrating to show it off at this stage. Oh, well.

Wow! I love your style. Reminds me of Peter Bagge.

One crit, though. The relationship between Master and Servant is supposed to be the focus, but it looks more like the little girl is shooing off an annoying insect rather than instructing her monster. Given your concept (a good one, BTW) I’d think she’d be holding an exam with a big “F” on it and trying to negotiate a better grade with the teacher. If he doesn’t, he’s monster food.

Just a thought. :shrug:

Thanks guys, for your nice comments. You’re right, it’s a bit dark right now, but that’s mostly because I work from dark to light. I promise it will get a lot lighter by the end.

Ilikesoup-- that’s a great idea, I’ll try to incorporate it in some way. The though’s been to have her nonchalantly waving to the monster to eat the teacher, but I think your idea is better. I’ve had trouble getting it to work so far. Thanks!

Hopefully, I’ll have a lighter and clearer update sometime soon!

Cool piece. Nice style and very humorous. Sort of a cartoon you’ll see in Nick channel. It kinda looks like you’re an animator. Dig the facial expressions too. Keep it coming dude.

The process is slow… Continuing to work from light to dark. Here’s a detail of one of the characters. Right now, the full image is pretty messy, but I hope to post it soon.

Naomi-- Thanks for stopping by! Yes, you’re right, she is pretty mean, isn’t she… I’ve actually illustrated a few children’s books, so I’m glad you think the style would work for that!

Tranchefeux-- Nice to see you here! I’ve admired your work for some time now and I’m eagerly following the creation of your Master/Servant masterpiece!

Arc80-- Thanks, I appreceiate that! I’m not really into animation that much, but I always try to get the characters looking a bit animated. Kind of a challenge in itself, but fun.
