Latest Update: Final Image: Druid Fire

This is my final image. Not nearly so beautiful as the images I have seen but it is a huge leap for me. Thanks to you all I have pushed myself further that I thought possible. Kudos to you all!
Fist time posting to this site. First time doing a challenge. This is just the lineart/concept drawing I came up with for the challenge.
So tell us a little bit more about your concept, what are you trying to tell us viewers? Oh and nice line drawing.
This image is probably around 50% finished. I have put down the basic color scheme and overall feel of the image. Though I have left one of the characters unfinished I have a strong idea of how I want to finish him.

Thanks for the compliment, I really appreciate it. What I want the viewers to come away with is a feeling of the passing on of knowledge from an elder to a young man coming of age. In this image, the younger of the two has learned of his arcane heritage for the first time. The elder Druid is instructing the acolyte in the arcane ways of this new and unknown art. This, the lesson of fire, was what came into my mind. Since fire has always held a tremendous amount of fear and respect in our society, I decided to use it as the vehicle of that lesson. Also, since fire was the catalyst that propelled man from wandering nomads to gathering societies I felt that this would be a great way to describe the transition from that of mortal man to magik user.
I hope that helps a little. As I said, this is my first attempt at such a prestigeous competition. I hope to do well, but am just happy to be a part of it.

In this stage of the image, I have finished blocking in all of the colors and shapes. I have also begun to fine tune several spots of the image. I have completed and gone further into the young man and the fire and basically am just working on tightening the overall image.
This is the final coloring. I am kinda uncomfortable with the forground vegitation. Perhaps you all could give me some advice as to how to better handle trees and bushes. I have always had difficulty with them.

Colours are still too childish, I mean there is no exposure. Fire is too dark and forest in background is too bright.
just a small suggestion… the colors near the fire dont look warm enough… a fire at this size should give a VERY strong yellow orange tint to the surrounding area… something that this image so far is lacking.

Thanks for the info, yeah I am still trying to deal with the whole fire issue. Thank you also for pointing out the deal with the lighting. The different sources of lighting in this pic are giving me a hard time but with crits like this I think I will do well by them.

I totally agree. Thanks for giving me the great advice. Like I said in above two statements, fire, to me, is very difficult thing to paint. But your crit is very helpful. Will give me something to work on in the days to come.

Just wanted to thank you all for the great feedback. I’ve continued to work on this image keeping in mind the comments people have made. I toned down the background and tried to brighten the fire while bringing in some more of an orange wash to try to get the warm feeling that fire would give. Please feel free to comment. Thanks
been workin on this a little, trying to keep in mind what everyone has suggested. Having quite a bit of difficulty with the fire. All in all this competition has really forced me to work hard. Thanks to all!

how about adding some blue hues at the background?. Something like being illuminated by the full moon or something. Just to create that more outdoor jungle feel?. Just my 2 cent ya. :o) Great Job so far!

Thanks for the compliments, it means alot. I agree with you but have some questions. You are more skilled than I so perhaps you can give me some feedback on my thoughts. Or lack thereof. LOL. My mind says to me that these two are deep within a heavy forest. I totally agree with your idea about the blue lighting and originally they were lit with a blue light from the back. But I think as I warmed up the fire and surrounding areas, I lost some of that light. My question is: if they were deep in a forest, would they still be lit? I struggled with that back and forth as you can see. What are your thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, I love your image. Very good work indeed.
On a second point. Does anyone know where I can download a good ftp program. I have never used it in my life and need to learn quick if I am to turn my zipped image in! LOL

Thank you so much, your comments truly mean alot. When I started this image I never expected to get such posative feedback. I come from another forum called conceptart and they never really responed to any of my work. So its nice to have some people actually give me good advice and crits. I will of course find your image and comment. I look forward to seeing it!
