Here is a quick value study. it needs some help in areas. the light hitting the paper doesn’t quite work yet. and i want to push a few thing back and bring some more forward. but it’s a start for now.

here is one of the ideas I have come up with. i’ts fairly simple and straightforward. I’m trying to portray a fearful relationship between man and his god. An enormous hand pointing down at a cowering figure seemed like a good way to establish the relationship between master and servant. I don’t want to clutter the background and distract from the focal point. This may be too simple of an idea for this challenge.
Not sure if it will lend itself to being as vibrant and detailed as some of the peices I’ve seen come from all of you talented people. I have a few other different ideas that I will post soon.

cropping the sides might be a good idea if I go with this image.
I really like the idea, it would be cool to see a more definitive god, like something that makes it a little more clear that its god…only reason why im saying that is that there are alot of art pieces that are being submitted that have the big guy, tinkerbell idea, which is what i saw at first, untill i read the title of the piece…but good idea

Ok i think i’m scrapping my other image. I like it, and I’ll probably finish it some other time but i don’t know if it has enough going for it visually. So, here is what I may go with now. The relationship (master and servant) in this leans more towards creator and creation, but there is still that master/servan dynamic. I’m trying not to portray the relationship between the characters as opressive or subserviant. but rather as something slightly more pleasant. I’m not completely happy with the composition yet. but it should come together a little better with the value studay.
any suggestions or critiques are very welcome.
A really touching idea. Open to many readings. I see this as a dark image. Will it be?

Beautiful Idea. Love your characters too. This is a great value study… the boys face is really well done but his hands seem a bit off right now. Your old man is very loveable! Glad I spotted this post. 
You mentioned the light hitting the paper. If it’s just a piece of paper with nothing opaque behind it (clipboard or book) it would appear translucent. It could have a nice golden glow to it, especially if it’s a key element in your picture. Nice work so far. Has the boy just realized that he’s mechanical or is he being “made”? I ask because it looks like he’s got just the framework for his wings.
Birdybear: Thanks for the comments yeah the hands need some work. I need to put the old mans other hand in also. just being lazy err um blocking things in for now btw your dragon and girlis really nice. i love the linework.
Ilikesoup: I was actually thinking about doing the transluscent paper thing. I’m not sure if it will pull focus from the feather or not, but i will try to do it subtly. oh and yes the boy is being made. I’m intendng on the paper having a blueprint of the feathered wings. as if the old man were explainging what his plans were to the boy.
