Master and Servant 2D Entry: Allison Frink

#8

Completely different approach; this one has more of an obvious relationship between the Mistress and her minions.

This one’s kinda funny with a slightly sinister undertone, since–I’m sure the sketch is too crappy for anyone to tell–the one squirrel has brought his mistress a ham and cheese sandwich from the lunchbox of the kid running screaming down on the ground (lower right).

There’s one more Concept coming–an implementation of Benita’s fabulous recommendation–and then I’ll pick one and move on, I swear!

#9

Oh wow, I love your new approach much better! Queen of the squirrels! I love that idea, dont stop what you do !

#10

So it’s down to these two compositions.

I love the epicness of the revised invasion one (thanks Benita!), but I like the intimacy of the cropped tree one (people can just wonder where the blazes the squirrels got a ham sandwich from)…so…torn…

HELP ME DECIDE!!! Please?

#11

I agree with CoreyArtE, the ‘epic’ composition is better.

Great sketches (nice style)… can’t wait to see more!

Oh, and Dib… pfffft! My garden gnomes will take care of… huh? WHA? AAAAARRRGGGH! COMPUTER! SECURITY BREECH!! GIR, QUICK… DEFENSE MODE!! (he salutes and jumps out the window and chases a squirrel). Dude, I love that show…LOL!

Cheers!

hi imriela! i was so busy watching all these threads that i lost yours! comparing all the sketches i would say the epic one with the boy and the streetlamp still looks best… but needs more squirrels (as you said) the new one with the closeup on the wall is maybe a little bit too “easy” (simple? don´t know how to say that…)

i think the boy is holding some electronic gadget in his hand? maybe a mobile phone or something? that could add to the theme “nature invades the modern city” i like the fact that the citylights “find a mirror” in the glowing eyes of the squirrels (my english sucks, i hope you can understand what i´m trying to say :))

waiting for some updates!

What’s up Allison,

good sketches. Interesting subject matter. Personally, i like the one with the girl lying down (the more intemate one), but i wouldn’t crop it like that. I would just keep the composition that you had before (vertical shot kinda of), because it’s a lot stronger and i think you can pull it off if you light it very well (hint: leaves casting shadows below). Keep it up.

cheers,
Archie

Well nice concept
I would prefer the girl lying over the tree with the kids far away below her.

Keep thhis cute spirit

I know you’ve narrowed it down to two others, but I just wanted to say that I really like this one. The composition of it works better in my opinion.

Good luck to you! It’s a very different and interesting concept you have going!

#16

BWA-AA-AAA! I think we have a winner, folks!

It finally occurred to me to combine the two best epic ideas but have her crouching–that way she seems more squirrel-like and the human-squirrel scale difference is slightly less pronounced (making for a better comp).

I think this one’s it, as I liked it enough to draw masses of squirrels in, but I’m of course open to thoughts and opinions from you much-more-experienced folks!

#17

dunkelgold: Hmm, excellent points; does the new one balance out the two? (What are you talking about? Your English is fabulous–better than some native speakers I know!)

Arc80, Snail, and Einar: Thanks ever so much for the input, even if it did leave me more torn than ever! “Epic or cute?! GAH!”

#18

hahahahaha, supercool piece. evil squirells overrun the city… way cool. keep it up and have much fun! very funny piece!   oh, and best luck by the way!

#19

hehe that looks really funny. I’m sure after this one you won’t paint squirrels anymore…
One question. Is it a window or what is it in front?

Good luck on that!

#20

hi! they are all sooo cute! i like the new one but i also liked the 2 brown sketches… decision… decision… decision… what can i say?

keep posting!

#21

That’s Awesome. I love the concept and the composition of your latest sketch. Can’t wait to see it progress

#22

Well, there you go! That one works really well. The gestures and layout are very good. Nice!

#23

Terribly enjoyably deliciously WICKED!

<3 (I am cooking at the moment- came online to find a recipe, but will come back laters for a more helpful critique)

Hi, Allison. This is Scott from Illustration. I just wanted to wish you good luck. You have a very interesting idea and I’m looking forward to seeing it completed. This kinda reminds me of one of the stranger aspects of the Magic card game: squirrel mob “An army of squirrels is still an army”. Oh, and how can I forget squirrel wrangler “Gnawed to death; bad way to go”.

#25

In case no one’s said it yet…“I…Like…Squirrels!!!” (if’n folks don’t understand, it’s old Tick cartoon reference when the new superheroes are training…)

And I’m loving the concept and layout =)

It’s been insane over here and will continue to be for the next week–I hate the end of the semester–but I’m determined to finish this brute!

Skimped out on the minions, I know, but I was afraid if I got too specific with the line art then I’d adhere slavishly to it during painting (which is an old bad habit I’m trying to break). Basic colors should be up soon; God knows I’ll need a break from my animation hw.
