Hi Victim335, good pencilwork there. I would recommend you work very generally on the colour / values before going into a lot of detail like you have with your latest. The trouble with doing it in full detail mode from scratch is that you might get 70% done then realise that you need to drastically alter something in order to make it work. And that would be a pain!
My advice would be to do a value study first. Have your pencil drawing in a multiply layer above the one you put colour into. Values will help your painting read well. Your first colour attempt did not read at all, everything was a blindingly strong element in the overall, which you sought to prevent through detailing his head out. So, fill the canvas with a 50% grey, then work out if you want the pic to be predominantly dark or light. If dark, then take say a 20% grey and swab it over the majority of the pic, all the areas in shade. Think big areas, not individual objects. Then take an 80% grey (nearer to white) and pick out the areas where light would be falling directly. Then within each of the value areas you can define a local range of light to dark, because value is about relationship - in a dark area, ‘white’ would still be a dark grey, but still lighter than anything else in this area. Check my thread because I have done a couple of these value studies.
I would suggest getting the pic to work in black and white first, then you can put another layer on top, set to ‘color’ and begin to swab colour into it (I only recently did this step, and it always needs more work to get it to look right). Hope that didn’t bore you, good luck and I’ll check back soon!
