Thatās why Iām bringing a video camera.
Massive Black/ConceptArt.org Workshop June 9-12 (Montreal)
It sounds good but itās too expensive for me. Iām suprised that Massive Black has not gone forward with online-distribution of learning material instead of having a bunch of people move around the world for a limited audience. It might be āhumanā and āfunā but Jason Manley knows better. They would make more money that way and more people would benefit from the artistsā knowledge.
For those who will actually go, enjoy!
While I agree with your reasoning, I think you misunderstand the point of the workshops. Itās the actual hands-on face-to-face that makes these workshops popular. As far as iām aware there is no profit involved here either. Itās purely intended to cover the instructorsā time there and any surplus goes back into the site (iām paraphrasing from what Jason has said himself).
As for distribution of material, there are apparently plans in the works. I donāt know much more than that iām afraid, just smatterings on conversations through the forum.
You are right Phil, Jason does know better, which is why he holds this workshop a few times a year all over the globe. If you really think people would learn better from a DVD then you obviusly have not gone to one of the workshops. Talking to Jason you realize that he isnāt doing this to get rich, he is doing it because it creates a stronger community and people learn more from it.
Being able to watch Marko draw and ask questions while he did so and then have him show you at that moment why and how he does things is infinitely more valuable. Plus you can then wander outside during one of Markoās 200 smoke breaks and chat even more (LOL)
Seeing pictures of Coroās legendary sketchbooks and holding them in your hand up close while quizzing him on technique is way better then seeing a video of it.
Donāt get me wrong, DVDās would be nice, but they donāt hold a candle to the real thing.
Ya Iām sure it doesnāt compare to DVDs, I understand the resonning behind the workshops and would like to attend, but my point was that while Jason does not do this for money, I canāt attend for monetary reasons. Thatās why Iām saying he might as well work on digital distribution. Itās not the same, but I would be able to spend that kind of money (and all of those that canāt attend for the same reasons or time reasons could as well) and MB would be making money. Itās not evil to turn a profit;) Heck, the workshops could even still continue as well. And when I say JM knows better, I mean he is the kind of guy that would be able to set this up.
Anyway Iām sure it will come eventually as Erilaz said.
Ah! I understand you now. My apologies!
But yes, DVDs and an artbook have been mentioned. How well founded that bit of info is, I have no idea! I guess weāll have to wait and see.
DVDs would be cool, and I would probably buy a couple myself, but after attending one of the workshops last year, I would say that a DVD of the event or some of the demonstrations would miss the point of what itās all about. Thereās lots to be learned for sure, but what is so great about it is the environment and the experience. The energy in the air of a few hundred folks gathered together who are really passionate about this stuff. Sitting in a dark, dingy basement of some building with the lights off, the windows busted out and a monsoon rainstorm going on outside and puddles forming on the floor, watching Andrew Jones (who was bed ridden with the flu, and I think in the hospital at some point) showing up and giving a demonstrtation on character design, was truly inspirational and totally badass. Although I learned alot of tips or tricks or whatever there, the most valuable thing I took home was simply inspiration. That might not seem like much, but really, what is an artist without inspiration? Absolutely worth the money, especially if you are just starting out.
New instructors added to the workshop:

"Hey fatkid, are you the same āthat fat kidā from CA? "
No, on the CA boards Iām just āfattkidā. I think āthat fat kidā is my long lost evil twin though
hey peepsā¦thanks for the support. The workshop stuff is starting to pick up steam. Microsoft, Ubi, Bioware and a host of other studios are coming to recruit and some will present. it is going to be a great show. the new workshop site should go up this week if i can keep from being swamped with clients at mb. it is a busy time with e3 coming up.
as far as the dvdsā¦we have begun production on 24 dvd titles (one series on game development through massive black and the other series will be boxed and sold through conceptart.org to support the non profit community). the first will be a character concept dvd by marko djurdjevic and a concept/maquette sculpture dvd by smellybug petey konig. these dvds have already been filmed and are in the patient stage of editing. We are pushing past the current standard/style of dvdās on the market which put most of us to sleep ā¦even though they are full of great info. we are hoping to have the first two on the market by workshop time and will release others as they are finalized. There are some heavy hitters on the dvd list and we are excited to be doing it. thanks for the interest.
We also have two art books in the works. One of which is near content complete and awaiting final layout. We simply need to choose a publisher at this point.
I hope to see you all at the workshop. Montreal is an awesome city and we have quite a lot planned for the event.
best,
Jason
When will we be able to purchase these dvds and where? You got me all excited now haha.
Edit:Ah it will be at conceptart.org.Now how about a timeframe so I can get my wallet ready?
Did you actually READ what he said?
we are hoping to have the first two on the market by workshop time and will release others as they are finalized.
Which means the first two DVDs should be ready (hopefully) by June.
yeah marko actually picked up a bunch of work from marvel from doing those redesigns.
strange how small the world is that way.
dvdās should begin to roll come juneā¦barring natural disasters or plagues.

Thanks for the updates Jason, itās really appreciated!
Canāt wait to meet you guys in June!:bounce:
Woah, woah, woah, Marko did work for Marvel? What did he do and where can we buy it? Who knew Marvel had great taste!
Splendid news! Iād love to see a full blown Marko marvel comic, but he probably hasnāt got the time!
Marvelous Marko, really
Too bad I canāt afford the montreal workshop, Iāll do my best to attend the european one. By the looks of it, it was great last year.
