Mario scene

#1

Hi guys
Mario did a scene and would like to know what you think.
I used maya, zbrush, photoshop and vray. :keenly:

I don’t fully feel the chase, maybe if you add some key of animation (of course you need a small rig) but yah for me miss a bit of moblur… maybe you can fake it.

Apart of that, If you try to give a CG aniamated movie look to it, maybe rework the skin/shader of Mario, it look plastic.

The first thing I think you could do to help the image as a whole is address the composition and poses of the characters.

The piranha plant in the background looks great, the shape the the stem looks nice and dynamic and it helps give some direction for the viewer to follow. The other three characters however look very static and rigid - this isn’t helped by their position in the image.

Mario isn’t seated on Yoshi, he’s sort of hovering in the air with his legs oddly straight. Yoshi is clearly running, which is good but the main bulk of his head, body and rongue are straight and therefore, static. Try to see how it looks with Mario sat on Yoshi’s back, leaning to one side with Yoshi leaning to the other to provide balance.

The Koopa Trooper’s expression looks pretty blank at the moment, he’s also very vertical which reduces the feeling that he’s running. Try to make his pose more dynamic - have him leaning forward into the run, arms pumping at his side, a look of panic on his face.

Try experimenting with the composition. Move the Koopa Trooper into the foreground, increase the perspective and make the image about those 3 foreground characters. You can still have all of the background components which make up Mario’s world, but perhaps arrange the scene so that they help lead the viewer’s eye toward the action.

There are technical things I would look at changing with regard to the over all tone and saturation of the scene but these might not be the look you’re going for, so I’ll save those comments for now

thank you very much
lots of cool tips’ll fix right now

#5

Mario’s head looks a little off to me, like the facial spacing and dimensions of the head are off slightly.

I’m using this as reference to compare, maybe its just the angle and the lighting. Otherwise its very good, the piranhas stance is spot on.

I’m trying to fix the poses and the positioning of the camera, which found?

ref’s for poses:

#7

Based on your ref the turtle head should be looking more backward. Also, the leg haven’t the same bend.

#8

Indeed, I will bow their heads more
I tried using that bend and for me was strange, do you think would be best?

#9

thank you LitheriaRising. I’m trying to fix all this now.

#10

then did a render with low resolution
mario looks too big

#11

Actually, if its big Mario its about right. I had forgotten how big he was in comparison. I think what you need to do is shrink the turtle just a little so its a bit shorter than big Mario on Yoshis back.

This guy is leaning when he runs but he is taller than the goombas and the turtles. He is shorter than Mario here.

Yes, I am increasing the Yoshi size and decreasing the size of the Koopa
