managing keys

#1

After receiving a question about deleting keys I realized that some more information about basic key management might be useful to people getting into messiah. So I hope to get some info up here from the way I work with keys - and invite you all to add your own techniques, tips and tricks.
Please have a look at the documentation as well:

  • start here -> “Learn it Once… Keyframing”
  • interface -> Basic Interface Info -> DopeSheet&DopeMaster
  • interface -> Basic Interface Info -> MotionGraph

And know that Joe Cosman has made a tutorial CD on animating. Good basic intro…

Again - the “edit - range” section at the bottom of the timeline should do this, but doesn’t.

Another example from the zombie thread:

Notice - if I were to grab those mini-dope keys and drag them in “motion” mode, I would be activating the non-active channels within those 6 channels.

NOTE:
Its now possible to toggle-select channels with Ctl-# (ie: Ctl-2 for “y”) to quickly get the channels you are after. VITAL for avoiding zombies and quickly getting to your channels.

rush321 just tipped me off to another way to efficiently delete a key with all its channels:
either in dope sheet or graph, select a key and right-mouse click on the delete button.
Same works with range - so - forget my sweeping method above.
Just set the range in/out and right click the delete button.

Wow! Thanks!

Really nice post. Should be a sticky.

Big thanks and New Years Greets!

#6

Can’t remember - does that remove inactive keys completely or does it make the ranged/selected keys become inactive?

#7

Latter. Just tested. Keys-be-gone.

#8

Doesn’t work on the inactive keys.
Would be nice if it did. (cough -request- cough)
Then you could just rmb erase straight away without the confusing wanted channels for unwanted ones after having switched the setting…

#9

Let’s not even go there!

Another tip. Really crunched for time right now. Let me know if these are helpful.

Thanks for all these little helpful tips David. My general approach to the motion graph and dope sheet in messiah is making it as small as possible but I can tell you make good use of it and it’s ways. More tips like these and perhaps someday I will too.

Trying to keep some tips coming despite not having much time… so bear with this fairly trivial example. Task: to copy 3 channels easily from one key set to another, leaving the other three…
