Making realistic strings

#1

Hey guys

I have some problems here creating a realistic guitar string. The strings are already modeled but just with a smooth surface. A real guitar string are made in a spiral kind of way.

I could use some tips to accomplish that…

Anyway here is a picture of what I got of one string.

So how can I make this string the best way? I have tried som things with curves and so on.
Is there a way to create a curve in the middle of the “mesh tube” ?

Thankful for any tips!

Hey man,

Have you tried to extrude a circle over a single curve?

Do you hope to have the coil modeled with geometry? You can also achieve that effect with a bump map.

Yeah, I tried that but I didn’t work very well because I needed the circle-string goin the middle of it.
Tried bump/disp also but didn’t work good enough.

Anyway I solved the problem. Scaled down every edge loop on the string -> converted edge to curve and after that just extruded a helix around the curve.

Thanks for the tips anyway!
