Making Objects Semi-Transparent in Geometry window

#1

Hey all… I had a quick question. I’m still in the process of working on my viper (from the WIP thread) and I’ve been using temp. objects as guides sometimes when adjusting topology.

Is there any way to make an object semi-transparent so when I’m using it as a guide, I can see through it, so I can see the topology of an object behind it? I just can’t seem to figure this one out!

Any help would be great!

thanks,
Jeff

I just want to mention that you should post your viper on www.scifi-meshes.com

What software did you use to make that gif animation?

The quick way would be to switch the object in question to wireframe mode. If you want it only partially transparent, though, I would create a new material, lower the opacity, and assign it to the object. Note that you’ll need to switch to shaded mode (TAB) for the transparency to kick in, so you’ll probably want to switch to wireframe once you’re in shaded mode.

arquebus: thx for the suggestion… I was planning on posting on sci-fi once I tweak it a bit more!

the slideshow stuff is all from Flickr, which is where I have my WIP images posted. you can view images in a slideshow in a new window - I just copied the url and use that in my sig…

LoTekK: i know this is going to be a real noob Q but… how do I create a new material? if there is a good tut somewhere I’d be happy to be pointed that way too!

EDIT: ok, i just realized that you can duplicate a material and then edit that one. is that the only way to create a new material?

Cant you just go into face mode, select the faces you want to change materials, then go to material>new material?

#7

um… I’m a dope… yes you can do exactly that!!!

thanks!!!

A couple of alternates, as well. Via the Outliner or main geometry window, with nothing selected, right-click -> material. This will create a new material (it’ll default to the same settings as the Default material), which you can then edit and assign.

LoTekK: Yes, both of those work too!!! thanks also!!
