I’ve learned some new tricks! Should make the modelling process much easier - I just got one complaint tho:

do we HAVE to submit concept sketches?

I tried drawing my concept and felt like crying when I took my hand away to look at it…

Would using clay models be okay? I’m very good at building up concepts with clay, and that way I’ll at least be able to work from it in the modelling stage.

Everyone have fun doing this one and if I manage to win the computer (unlikely) then the guy/gal in second place contact me sothat we can maybe trade plz.

ufff - I just can’t figure it out at times…

This is just a test picture mostly - but to anyone who looks at it… there is something wrong - can you help me figure out what the hell it is? This is supposed to be a three jointed leg of which I’ve already partially got the first joint sorted. I already have some general ideas of how to do the rest, but every possibility just brings more problems and “why it doesn’t work” thoughts.

If anyone could give a link or two showing diagrams of working robotic leg setups to give me an idea of how it should be done, I’d really appreciate it. On the same note, if anyone could tell me how the hell to place SOMETHING to make this whole thing animateable - it’d get me one step closer to finding all the problems.

I haven’t gone into IK yet, and all the times I’ve tried Bones they just didn’t work regardless of what I tried.

Thnks

I tried drawing a concept again today and was surprised to find it came out better than the last one! Which means it still looks like nothing - but still…

Anyway - since I can’t produce a concept sketch right now, I’ll rather just tell you about the concept:

Desert battlefield on an unimportant planet in an unimportant solar system and wotnot.
Right in front of the camera there is a robot, partially man and basically all bad-ass metal machinery. The arms and legs are completely replaced by robotics, and it is visible on the exterior of what is left of the flesh that all the remaining bones have been replaced with metal.

This particular robot is busy launching itself backwards a bit offset from the camera, with his large big-mean-killing-machine gun pointed at his next target. His plasma shield has already lost three of the conduits rendering it virtually useless over the majority of the surface - he is busy detaching it to allow for more manuevreability.

There is a dropship towards the top left of the picture, dropping some more of the robots onto the battlefield and about to be hit by a big red laser beam type thingy.

There are many wounded (or should I say “damaged”) soldiers on the battlefield and some are crawling towards their fallen comrades to look for a working pair of legs.

The armor on our main character has also taken some hits and his left leg is exposed with some of the cables and hydraulic tubes severed.

Big bad robots on a big bad battlefield having a big bad war that will make for a big (very bad looking) picture.

END

Anyways - the picture I uploaded this time is the frame for the legs, or what I have of them sofar. I used NURBS Points to make the cables, and will still be adding more detail to the inards of the legs. The reason it all looks so plain and simple right now is because as mentioned in the concept story, the robots use armor plating. Removeable/Replaceable plates to cover up all the important bits.

I’m hoping I get this one to look better than the last, for which the final image was never uploaded, but still. I have yet to learn how to make “masks” in Photoshop to make the task of composing the final image easier and more rewarding.

Enough yapping - back to the modelling! :bounce:

bleh - found yet another error in the design… The proposed “shock absorbers” at the front are being changed back to hydraulics, since the rotational values are out of wack.

Anyway, this is just a light picture to show to progress of the legs so far. Note on the ‘pelvis type thing’, that’s just a reference, and is only supposed to be the armor side. The inner frame still needs to be built.

I started on a face recently, and to my surprise it came out exactly like my ref model’s face (the pics are all skew and out of proportion) :applause: Now just to finish off the special robotic eye and make the head plating. Got an old anatomy book of my mom’s out to check on the muscle locations and noticed I’ll be able to completely replace the collarbone and where to join up the shoulder part of the robotic arms. Should make for some interesting results :hmm:

anyway - latest picture is up, and don’t worry if it can’t load, that’s just cuz the server’s bandwidth is all being used.

*I’m trying something so sorry if it doesn’t work - plain link to follow

primary modelling phase for the head finished now. Time to get cracking on details, refining and wotnot. Still hafto take away his throat and replace it with a metal casing - same goes for the collarbone, shoulderblades and spine. ufff caffeine overdose is wreaking havoc on me inards

Hey everyone.

Looks like I’ll be falling out of the competition this time. My pc’s cooling died 2-4 weeks ago, and unfortunately I do not have the money needed to fix it. I can’t use any other pc since the only one capable of running a SATA hdd is my friend’s – and I can’t use it for so long.

I’ll still be uploading what I can before the end date, provided I gain access to what I have.
Oh, and I was also unable to do my concept. Again, try as I might I still can’t get a picture other than a blob with four odd looking sticks coming out of it.
I’ll be finishing the model over time, but for now I’m going to focus on creating a storyboard and music for a demo vid. Going to be close to an idea I have for a movie, which I hope to make the first full feature CG film by a South African

See you all when I get to the finish line.

the head has had major changes btw - the nose is fixed near to realism, and the lining around the head has gone. The right eye has been changed to be only the little cameras you see now, and the mouth has also been fixed to be more realistic

Feh - managed to find this pic on my mom’s computer - an old’ish one I sent a friend. It’s not quite as complex as the last image I had, and as someone noted in a chat room, this one has “man breasts” :stuck_out_tongue:

My machine is still down, so I’ll hafto upload as a seperate WIP thread after the comp has ended. But in any case, I had fun, again learned a whole lot of useful tricks and wotnot.

I hope you all had as much fun as I had, and that we can all look forward to an even more exciting and fantastic challenge from CGNetworks’n’Pals!
