I have always been impressed by people who overcome a tragic accident and go right back to living their lives to the fullest. There have been many stories about athletes who have lost a limb yet had the courage and endurance to return to a sport and thrive. These people are truly inspirational, and in the near future robotics will also have a role in encouraging those with doubts that they can challenge themselves and succeed.

My character is a mountain climber who had almost given up after a disaster nearly took his life. He has overcome paralysis by means of robotic assistance, years of physical therapy, and strength of will. Now he is determined to scale the same mountain, follow the identical route, and reach the summit.

Sketches in progress…

Here is my initial thought for this challenge; a mountain climber who has overcome a crippling accident with the help of some machine enhancements. He has recovered, trained, and returned to the mountain to face his fears.

At this point I have not decided on a look for the machine part of the character. Further brainstorming will explore the difference between robotic assistance or a more futuristic cybernetic limb replacement.

I’m excited to begin the modeling phase but will put a bit more thought into this before jumping in to that stage.

I’m already very impressed with both the quantity and quality of the entries for this challenge. Good luck to everyone!

Hey, good sketch. But instead of just replacing his limbs with robotic once, think of a way to have something that actually helps him climb maybe? Maybe and extra tiny arm to help him drink while he’s limbing? or some kind of hand that transforms in to gripping claws. Something more then just a robotic limb replacements.

I actually started out thinking of the untimate machine assisted climber, complete with claws, but my inititial sketckes for that didn’t capture the right feel. This first posted pic is just an idea of having him back to 100% ability, rather than a more human than human style.

I still plan try a few sketches at both extremes and hope to find a good balance in there somewhere.

Also need to do some research on current climbing gear and then think about how it might be improved in the future.
