Everything is looking great man. REALLY. Looking at the tentacles on the head, you may want to think about “connecting” them to the head somehow. Looks like they are justing growing straight out of the head. Of course, you may be fixing that right now. Just a thought.

I’m planning to have everything together in the same scene (exception for the background). After, I’ll split my scene in layers, render and composite in after effects. Also, I spent my last bucks and I bought more 512mb today trying to render this scene with less render passes. I hope it works!

Sorry if this has been asked before, but how do you do your lighting? I’m 13 and I have been using max for a few months, but I can’t figure out how to get good beauty renders so I would realy appreciate some lighting tips. I love your work!
The best of out of 2000 entries. One little thing, the skin does strike me as having a bit of the standard blinn shader quality, rather than the quality of skin. I really think you could make this guy cooler if you incorporated more layers of specular, specifically some VERY diffused specular. And real skin has a strong fresnel quality (it’s reflections are dimmer when its facing the view, stronger when seen from an angle) which could be incorporated into the specular.
And I want him to have big hairy gorrila arms damn it!

heya, little buddy! Great to see your interest in 3D at 13! Well, for the light, try to do some tests using a “dome light”. Dome light is a bunch of lights distributed like a dome. You can see an example here: 
All you have to do is: create some spot light with very low resolution maps (for speed increase). Try to make each light with very low light emission. You have to divide the global value of your light for the number of lights that you created (example: 1 / 40 lights = 0,025 for each light). This is a basic explanation. Go ahead and make some tests…

Just kidding, I find your work totally cool in a really disturbing way. I really don’t have any critique for your work. I seems very professional and thought out. I don’t care for some of the nitpicking about this angle, that texture etc. For me, the most important thing is what the final product tells you, and not the technical stuff that goes into it.

I tried to creat a dome light setup in max 6, but it didn’t work very well. should I use the mental ray renderer, and if so should I use final gather and/or global illumination? my other thought is that maybe my material is bad, do you have any suggestions for what basic test material I should use? one major problem I noticed when I tried the dome light setup was that certain areas that should have been dark, most notibly his mouth and nostrills, were the britest areas of him. hey cg_crazy , you should try e-light script for 3dsmax , it creates a dome of light for you and and you can adjust all the lights thogether at the same time with it, great script by Skyraider3D

also dont make your material too shiny… if you want to get a soft look , otherwise make it how shiny you want and apply other lights around your object

Your talent, (alongside with your discipline and humility) are so rare (and i dare to say SO unique), that at this moment of your life everything seems to be shaping-up to give you the best that you deserve. You look like the man that does everything right with no second intentions, but just love and passion for what you do! So it is fairly natural that life is giving you all the good harvest for the goodness you have sown.
