Machineflesh 3D Challenge Entry: Jonathan Leander Stuart

#8

im having a tough time decideing exactly how to model the arm. My experience is mostly organic poly modeling so machines are hard At the moment i am just using polys. Should i switch to nurbs and build all the hard metal part that way? any suggestions would be appreciated. I think this might be the most complicated model i have ever attempted.

Great start… love the idea of the exhaust comming out his back…

Good luck in the challenge…

looks great so far. just think of the simple structure, then when thats done add detail and other parts .

#11

Really nice concepts, hope to see more modelling soon. I’m not very sure abt nurbs, but i think it should be easier to create mechanical objects using polies… anyway, i’m just a poly user talking… :stuck_out_tongue: well good luck!!! :buttrock:

#12

Thanks for the comments, I think i’m going to stick to poly’s I just had an idea to make the hydraulics hexagonal or octagonal just to be wierd or mor archaic looking.

does any one know how to rig pistons in maya or where i could find a good tutorial on it?

i will post some more modeling tonight i think I’m going to rough in the upper torso and head tonight.

:wip: :wip:

This is about 3 1/2 hours of modeling with little to no reference in the second image it seem obvious i have to fix the proportions… I happy with the eye thoughI have to cover up the left side of his head any way but for some reason i alway model the left side of the face and mirror…just a quirk i guess.

Once I finish modeling the base head I can add his right Eye Prosthetic and this will actually start to look like something worth while. Been awhile since i modeled any thing so im just shaking off the cobwebs and scraping of the rust on my brain. I’m Back In Black

modeling is going good, keep posting updates man!

#17

Finished base head Now starting second modeling pass for cybernetic enhancements

#18

looking good. have you thought about an oxygen aparatus? it does get pretty gritty under ground.

#19

interesting take on the theme, looking forward to seeing the first WIPs

#20

I though about the oxygen device a little but if i mad a mask for him it would cover his mouth and prevent being able to see his expressions. I think the metal wind pipe i giving him as well as other indication of internal cybernetics should cover the whole breathing undergound thing.

Like internal filters or something, maybe i should have little drawer in his throut that can be pulled out to change or clean the filter screen. … Actually, I think that would be kick ass have to write that one down.

I will posta new pic before i go to bed tonight i built ears and should have at leas his neck modeled in rough before i sleep.

Calling it a night, I added ears and the beginnings of shoulders

#22

Upper Torso mirrored and smoothed Various anatom will be replaced w/ enhancements after i finish base organic model which will consist of 3/4 upper right torso and 2/3 right leg and hip right leg below knee will be mechanical.

#23

BTW I wanted to thank every one for their kind words and criticism/ ideas about this thing your encouragement has been helping me stay motivated.

Will Post more updates tonight before sleep takes me.

pS. Forgive my wackjob spelling skills they are mostly the result of typing to fast and forgeting spaces

#25

Jeez i was tired when i posted that…I screwed up i didnt need to model the abs because they are not part of the design they are replaced with his burners oi. i hate doing unnecessary work<sigh> wtf was i thinkin

:banghead:
