Machineflesh 3D Challenge Entry: Jim Heathcott

you certainly have a talent with detailing. Well, can’t wait to see your modelling wips again. I think the model will look much cooler if you put somekind of … jack or attachment where we can actually see some exposed flesh connecting to some kind of mechanism (sorry if I’m being a bit vague) , because i fell that the head is not quite attaching itself elegantly to the mechanism. Think of it as transitional zone between the flesh and machine.

this is cool work Soapy i like the details you are adding besides the idea looks nice mixed between horrible and fun. yikes.

#43

 soapy lookin so far I found your work really amazing… details are really wonderful and well this is big work !

But for bodies comment I think is better when you can post an image of 2 or 3 different pov. This can permit to understand if some parts like arms are good or not…

Just looking fastly I have the impression that the arms are a little bit short, but more ā€˜bodies-fan’ expert can probably post some better comment als mine…

Thanks guys, yeah Ray I know the head needs work on the transition. I will try and make the area around the metal bumpy, lumpy, puss filled and bruised or whatever. Right now it just looks like a mad scientist party hat…

As for the body Jddog, you are right the body is all out of whack proportion wise. The head is too big, the arms too short and the rest of the modeling pretty weak. I havent done up a storyline to explain the image but as usual these guys will be toys like all my other images lately, so perfection is not a huge concern. Besides being a lame modeler I need all the excuses I can get. But I do appreciate your comments and will make some changes anyways. Some toys have really good detail.

It just occurred to me, maybe he should have no shirt on? Add a little kink to the scene…

mmm well but this by the end is not a real human… it can be… just arms disturbing me… I don’t have the idea to tell you that a ā€˜humanoid-monster’ need to be like a human… so the head don’t disturbe me and the model, until now, is not finished… I mean probably with legs and other details a crits like I did can be different…

ā€˜use the force’

I like it… a bloody shirt… hehe sound terrible…

excellent work anyway…

Hmmmm. Not really sure what to say just yet. I’m sure your vision of the final version will answer all my questions. Until then, keep on truckin, bro. Very interesting them you have going here.

Ok the Surgeon General character, thats what I have taken to calling plug head, took a bit of a 180, I took off his turtle neck and made him bare skin. In fact he will be naked allover. His apron is going to be translucent plastic. I dont think we will see much of him behind his table, so it shouldnt be too scary, heheh.

I converted that hand I made into a foot. Not sure if it was much of a shortcut, but it will be a freaky looking foot anyways.

This weekend sometime I will upload the results of the latest tinkering. Thanks for the comments gents, I will try not to disappoint.

You know Ann Margaret’s version of ā€˜Mack the Knife’, that is the flavour I am going for in this image.

#48

On the sidewalk, ooh Sunday morning uh-huh
Lies a body just oozing life, eek!
And someone’s sneeking round the corner
Could that someone be Mack the Knife

#49

Yep heheh, love her voice on that one.

Oh, and I have to be carefull I dont veer too far off in the direction of Andy Warhol’s movie Frankenstein in 3d, that is another influence on this image. I got thinking of old movies and went found that one on a fan website and I am afraid it is creeping into my pysche and throwing its shadow over this image. Total freak of a movie… ever see it?

#50

Can’t say I’ve seen it, I’ll have to look for it. There is a video store down the road that carries old and obscure movies. That may be the place to look for it.

#51

Added feet, legs, and tool yoke and numerous adjustments. The turtleneck is gone and I’ve given him better muscle definition. What do you guys think about the toy seams? The see- through apron?

#52

oops screwed that up…

#53

New parts etc.

#54

New work on froggy, froggified the model and made some changes. Optimized for underwater work. He needs a little work here and there, maybe a speedo?

#55

I really like how Froggle is coming along, but not too keen on the seams on the surgeon’s arms (if those are seams, that is). It might be the angle but looks more like the arm is in one solid piece with heavy indentions just below the elbows. What if you removed the indentions all together and aimed more for the look you have around his neck, where the two parts have generally the same size in the connecting areas?

Keep those weird toys coming! :buttrock:

Here’s a quickie made with Otto’s arm and the demo of 8.5 (I’m at work now so I don’t have access to my regular computer). It’s crude but illustrates what I meant in the post above.

#57

Thanks Anders, yeah the bump is a transition into the hand part. I will fix that up and make it more like you suggest. Actually I sort of got things backwards I am thinking froggy should have had the ā€˜stuck on’ hands and feet and the surgeon should have been one piece. oh well. Maybe I will just lose the seams on the surgeons arms and feet altogether. I am happy with how froggy came out though.

Oh btw Anders, I have a new figure almost ready to post. He is a guy with really big shoulders and long arms cliche 3d mechinoid. Sort of an Igor guy, every self respecting mad scientist has an Igor type assistant to do the hump work, don’t they? Right now he is kinda goofy looking and needs lots of work. After that I will be building one more character, time permitting.

So far this contest has been a good learning experience for me. The coolest new thing I picked up is the weld tool. I hadn’t used it before, it works great. I hope that in the next month of modeling I will learn some new tricks.

Can anyone tell me what the default size is for pictures in these threads? My jpegs are pretty clean when I click on em, but when seen in the thread they look like shit on a stick. How do I fix that, or what size should I save to?

#59

That Igor-character sounds interesting! Every self-respecting mad scientist should have a drone-like side-kick, preferably with a hump.

The Weld tool is excellent and once you start using it you will find it invaluable. It’s not perfect, however, since it will always weld to the highest point of the selected ones. You select two points, A and B, and once in a while it will weld them in ā€œwrongā€ place, so to say – you wanted it to weld where A is but it went with B’s location instead. There are several plugins that will remedy this and the one I use, Weld Tools (free from PlugincafĆ©) lets you weld to the lowest point and to the center of the selected points. Very, very useful. Point Collapse is another plugin for this but I haven’t tried it.

About the pictures: I think CG Networks compresses them pretty heavy in order to speed up the threads. I’ve seen images that are only 200 x 200 pixels and they still have that grainy look till you click them. Nothing to worry about, just keep those weird toy characters coming.

Installed bones. Just a quick swim pose to see how the rig works. I am pretty happy with this skeleton, it works pretty well. I was a little worried about the webbing in the fingers but they are no problem. A few things could use adjustment but nothing major . The arms hanging part way down in the model seems to serve the bone rig well, it was a bit of an experiment for me. I still need to bone the face but otherwise this guy is mostly finished.

If nothing else goes well in this contest I am really happy with this new model.
