Machineflesh 3D Challenge Entry: Jesse Sandifer

#41

Progress on the monitor just below the chest area. I’m working on getting the skin area to flow nicely into the mechanical areas. So far it’s been pretty fun! I wish I could just sit down and model my challenge all day like some of you guys.

#42

Nice looking stuff Sandpiper

The only crit I can think of is if the mechanical part if his neck was more organically shaped like something from H.R. Geiger. I also really like the details on the monitor!

#43

Really nice, clean and articulated.
About the neck part - if you make a rubber shader…?
Cute monster!!!

#44

Dra(hen: Figured you would find my thread eventually. I checked out Giger’s work and I see what you mean. I think I’ll keep it like it is for awhile and see how it fits into the overall style once I’m done modeling. I kinda like the soft turned corners right now. Preference I guess…

EmpY: Cute eh? Dang. I gotta get this guy looking less adorable! I think some expression on his face will help that and like I said before, the textures and lighting should help too. As for the rubber shader, that’s actually an interesting idea. I may do part rubber, part (something else). Not all rubber though. It needs to appear functional as a device and I think the texturing will really make the difference.

Thanks dudes for the crits. Opening up my eyes to interesting ideas…

Alot of nice clean modeling…You are on the way for another nice piece of work Sandpiper…

               Nice details,smooth modeling,crisp and clean...........

Now you should add some wickedness to this here guy.................Put some grissled alien like teeth in that mouth.....When I look at him,I think he needs this something more.............I think that some wicked denture work could be the answer.......Still the overall work here is very well done, and interesting to boot................Wicked teeth will lose the cuteness, but I am sure you have more in mind well beyond this, with this being WIP and all.Looking forward to seeing the next iteration of this piece................

#46

A more overall look without arms or legs or tail. Still working on that side area and will work some on that face soon too so he’s not so dern cute. Then I GOTTA move onto the arms and legs…

#47

Trying to figure out the skin look. I’m going for a “squished together” look for the chest area. The brown colored skin on the back is a little too “brainy” or organlike to me right now. I’ll take some of the puffiness out. Does this look weird or out of place?I could just make it all smooth I suppose…dunno.

#48

any crits on the skin? Too wrinkled? Direction of muscle striation unrealistic?

I tried to make it more fat and skinlike rather than flexed muscles.

#49

Ok, so after sleeping on this issue, I think I’m going to go back and redo the skin. I’ll do it the opposite way so it wraps around rather than up and down. Less grooves, needs more subtlety.

#50

yeah, if you think about it, wrinkles typically reflect how the skin moves, or how it is flexed, so it would make more sense going the other direction IMO…(look at the wrinkles on your wrist or hand for example)

nice detail though–sorry you have to go back and redo it…

#51

yes… I think like bigfatclown… the skin, like that, seems a trunk… It can’t flex :hmm:

But it’s a good way, and if you change orientation, I sure it will better, and maybe : perfect

#52

Lemog and BFC: I do agree. Super duper crits!

It does have to make sense eh? It WILL be perfect once I change the orientation and make it look more realistic. Plus the textures will help to show “wear and tear” and all that good stuff.

I’m hoping that I can get this skin done so I can MOVE ON.

#53

I like the way the creature looks, what type of setting are you going to add to the scene? Is it going to be a desert or something else. I like the shader as well it reminds me of sculpe.

#54

This is definitely how I want this to look as far as the flesh goes. A loose layered feel but still seeming to wrap around the body.

#55

A closer look and different angle…

#56

Different and interesting…i see an attention to visual detail arrising which i like very much…not too much to crit technically yet…but …i will follow your progress :bounce:

P.S: i really liked your Mech- chicken work…brilliant!

#57

:bounce:
what ?!
i haven’t posted anything here !?
Great piece your are doing !!
I love this creature !
I hope we’ll be able all of the CGTMFC

DimitrisLiatsos: Welcome! Thanks for taking a look at my work. The Lil’ Chickwalker was just a stepping stone to bigger and better projects for me, so hopefully this challenge will produce something even more. I appreciate your comments very much. I’ve visited your MF thread too and think it’s going really well so far! Detail is obviously VERY important around here eh? I promise I’ll actually make some comments/crits on your stuff very soon…

harnelbe: I guess since this challenge has close to 1800 challengers, it’s hard to hit em all eh? The family photo is actually an excellent idea! Imagine someone volunteering to render all those up in one image…for some reason I think Virtuoso could actually take that on. Thanks for taking the time to comment on my stuff. Your work is very detailed to the point of insanity. Which means, I like it.

#59

Thanks to quickly answered Sandpiper
My suggestion could ba at the final sketche a step like a Stadium step or step
used for the families photos and suggest position of each challenger which could render there character. I would be easy to model a step and an universal camera position and after for each challenger donwload the object and pose his character ?

#60

kinda like a big high school photo? What will present the main problem will be the 1800 pieces that have to be captured in one image. Would be sweet if it could work though!
