Southern…I have always enjoyed your work. Some of the best out there. It’s nice to see you have entered and will be even better to see your creation come to life…being a Max and Maya user I have long thought of adding Z-Brush to my arsenal, one of those reasons is your work.So I will keep an eye out for your updates, well both eyes, and look forward to them very much.Next stop Z-brush I am thinking…

Well, this was a long time coming but I finally got time to do a bit of scribbling for this thread. I had a bit of an issue in that every idea I came up with seemed to be covered in other peoples threads so I have stopped looking for now and whatever will be will be.

I intend to get some pen sketches up here tonight then work on them for a few days until I have a good set of reference sketches to start modeling from.

Back in 10 mins with the first scans and some thoughts.

So, an idea starts to take some form on paper at least.

I decided to create a character with a squid/octopus lower half. I like futuristic subjects and settled on a creature that had been created to work on dangerous under sea sites dealing with biohazard containment and rescue situations.

My first sketch started off well but ended up far too cute for my liking.

I liked the idea of using a metalic human skeleton for some of the character. I liked the skull shape on the first sketch but not the overall feel. I tried to work out an overall shape in the next sketch and ended up adding a tank of some type. This evolved into a bio waste container in the shape of a Snail shell/Scuba tank.

Happy now that I had an idea that was at least going somewhere I thought about tipping the pose forward and elevating the head as if swimming. By now I had decided that the skull was going to be a winner and it would stay. Trying to give a more merman type effect I gave him cheek fins.

Tipping him more upright gave him a more etheral look, possible more of a Jelly fish type swimmer than a squid.
The fish tail coming out of the squid section looked cool so I went further with that idea and later even tried shark fin.

Not sure with the upright I flipped him forward again and decided this was the way I would model him. The tank was now a definite Snail-shell-tank and the stabilizer fins were feeling right.

Getting more confident I started to think how I would break down the modeling. I decided on

Fish tail - Model in LW/ZBrush . Texture with AUV’s in ZBrush
Squid limbs - ZBrush ZSpheres. Texture in Z
Human metal torso - Lightwave/SILO. HIgh detail precision modeling.
Snail tank - LW/SILO.

I want to spend a bit longer on concepts and value any crits and comments along the way.

Great concept… what else could be said. “In motion” version seems to be most interesting one… somehow reminds me sentinels from Matrix…

Hey southern!!!
Another Zbrusher here (one of the masters!!!).
Can’t wait to see the entire thing modeled and with full color

keep it up :wavey:

I made a bit of a start the other day from the sketches. Done with Lightwave, ZBrush and SILO so far. Just putting together the pieces bit by bit.

Hello Southern!

Please rock on!

So, I’m on to the finer modeling detail now and having a load of fun. I doing the arms and hands now and then onto more mechanical parts for the upper torso.

I’ve decided to go back later and rework the head into a combination of a skull and divers regulator unit which sends feeds back to the shell tank. The skull head is starting to annoy me now so it needs to be changed.

I keep going back and looking at the sketches I did at the start and I really like the vertical one. I’ve modeled the creature in the horizontal position but I tried to do a mock up of the vertical one in photshop. see below.

This is a quick render with some 2D adjustments to help me place parts and pipes etc.

Really good work there, as usual. And I’m glad you decide to change the skull; I thought it looked unnecessary, in terms of style and functionality. A more hydrodynamic shape would fit better.
Keep it up!

#20

Guy, I llove your model ! Really, it’s rocking !
I hope you gonna begin texturing… Good luck !

Southern,

I am not sure about the shell on the creatures back, or the tail end- I think the reason is that the front end of this creature, the top back, and the end tail, are not yet in harmony.

I am amazed at the progress, it is evolving in ways, I had not thought.

Your modeling technique is just wonderful!
:applause: :applause:

This is very cool Gken! :buttrock:
There’s something about the shell I don’t like. And the skull needs some sculpting. I’m sure you know already.

#23

The modelling looks good, I am just a little worried about the proportions. I think for the top view the tail end doesnt look wide enough for the body. Atleast to me, anyways…

other then that, looks great, cant wait to see more.
