PAAAINT!! duddleman what are you doing my dear?? I just hope you’re some kind of ninja-DaVinci-SpeedyGonzales. You will do it! I’ll come back to check on your progress and stress you like mighty hell!!

#244

okay okay… i know… it’s not very colourful…

But it’s the first stage!!

Laying down lots of quick messy paint to start sorting the shadows across the characters. Not necessarily all the light and shadows… but kinda like an ambient occlusion pass in 3D. Sorting out tucked away areas and shapes.

#245

Aaaaaaah at least…

Go on my friend duddle!!

#246

i’m painitng… i’m PAiNTiNg!!!

but i can’t my big monitor anywhere near my phone line… so i have to disconnect everything to post updates and WIP!!! Which means you’ll get a few images at a time…

I’m posting a few now… a few before i go to bed tonight… and then probably three postings tomorrow!! And then a couple more before the big submission on friday!!

Thanks for the comments!! And the encouragement!! I’m very flattered people are taking an interest…

More to come in the next ten minutes…

Here’s a screengarb from photoshop.

As i said in the last post, i’m just throwing tonal stuff down to define shapes and some of the more obvious shadows. It’s all pretty dark, but i’m gonna paint over most of this as i go along. It also helps generate texture and interest on the surface.

Pretty lazy with layers at this point… i get quite finickity (?) as i progress. There’s a couple of line art layers (set to multiply) and a layer set with a mask for these shadow layers. The mask is useful because i can be dead messy painting and mask it out later. And also soften some of the shadows… although there’ll be adjustment layers and painted layers doing that too later. Finally there’s the base colour which i do some reeeeally rough scribbling on to sort out shapes.

So here’s where it’s currently at… i’d have liked to have been further on, but my laptop’s been mucking me about with my wacom and display over two monitors!! So that took most of my morning!! It seems a bit slow… but that could just be the size of the image… I’ve not done much at this scale on my laptop…

I’ve got most of tha base layer done on this image… and i’ll be starting to add PROPER colour soon.

#249

Me again!!

I thought i’d chuck this one up too…

This is what’s there without the line art. I’m still not sure how much of the line art i’ll ultimately use and how much will get lost in the painting. Like i said yesterday, i’m gonna play bthat one by ear.

I’m actually having really good fun messing about with the photoshop standard brushes… there’s loads of new ones in PS7 that mahe pretty textures and shapes. Kinda makes up for the fact that i’m not brave enough to try and learn painter in the time i’ve got left on the challenge. I might even make a few PS brushes of my own as i get on with the colourin’ in…

There’s a few errors in the line drawing that i mightj correct in the painting stage too… or i might leave them as a stylistic thing!!

Hi, mate. Thanks for getting back to me. Do you know anything about FTP? Is it a server of theirs, or do i need a certain bit of software for it…there doesn’t seem like anything to point me in the right direction.

I know you’re working like crazy to get your work done, and you don’t need me hassling you.

#251

Hi Paul…

An FTP site is a server where you can upload data easily over the net. I upload my website to my webhost’s FTP, for instance. But they are usually passworded for security and in the case of this competition, i think we have to uploadto the FTP with specific image titles relating to our thread. You will need to zip your image with WInZip… and make sure it’s a TIFF.

If you go to ‘Submit Final Image’… there’s the details of the FTP at the bottom of the page.

The FTP host is what you need to put in your address bar. You’ll be prompted for the username and password, and then should be able to upload your image with the name provided. AT least that’s the theory. I can’t try it out until friday night!!

I hope that’s useful!!? Good luck…?

Off to make some dinner now… and then back up to the pooter for some serious colourin’ in…

I hardly comment anything here on cgtalk, but this…you’re a number one as far as i’m concerned.

Please keep kicking our asses! We love it when you do that.
Unique style. You. You’re good You. Inspired me, just finish up your image son. :buttrock:

#253

Interesting stuff Jonny! I really like these last cleaned up line drawings, they promise a lot about the future.
Do you have any thoughts about light directions? Specific highlighted spots? Drastic shadows? The light looks maybe to head on right now? Or is that just my narrow mind which can’t comprehend what you are thinking?
But I must say, you are producing awesome stuff here. I hope you’ll make it. But I think you know what late nights are for

#254

Oh YEAH!!!

Great tonals!! this piece is really coming to life… I mean, it was awesome before (love your pencil work), but the paints seem to really give it a rich, dynamic quality.

Keep painting bro… you’re definately among the cream of the crop in this challenge!

Hi mate…this has to be the freshest piece in the competition(in my opinion) It has such attractive qualities…It’s screaming to be Pixar’s next project.

Congratulations.

Paul

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :eek: OMG! :eek: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

go for it, duddle! And come to Portugal, I would like very much to know you.

#257

Haha… and i’d like to watch England win the European Championships!!! And portugal copuld come second, perhaps…?

Paul: Cheers for the comment. It was seeing ‘A Bug’s Life’ that made me buy my first computer… so mentioning Pixar is a huge compliment. It’d be a dream to work for them…

Artjunkie: I’m still painting!! But it’s getting late… i’ve resorted to a nice glass of whiskey next to my wacom so it might be sleepy time soon!!!

Mikael: Nice to hear from you again… where are you? Still at Cosgrove? I’ve given some thought to the lights but I’m going to get them right in layers over these first images. It’ll be coming from the left of the screen…

Adamos: Cheers!!!

I’m just about to post some more images… then get some sleep… and up early for a long day tomorrow!!!

Thanks for the interest!!

#258

Not a lot to say… adding in the fur… who’s idea was it to do a furry animal anyway!!? I’ve not got time for fur!!!

Not worrying too much a bout lightsource… gonna do a lot of that malarkey later with adjustment layers… i think???

#259

Been mucking around with the fur a bit… some concessions to the lighting but still kinda planning on getting that right later…

Gonna block in some colour on the monkey girl, the little monkeys and the mechanical gumpf atop mr.Orang Utan…

I’ll post again in the morning…

Sweet dreams…

#260

Oooooh! Duddlebug, this is rockin’! :buttrock: Keep it up!!! Well, I guess you can catch some sleep… but save some whiskey for tomorrow, ha ha ha!

Can’t wait to see it finished!!!:bounce:
