Machineflesh 2D Challenge Entry: Gregory Marshall

#4

This started out just as a simple sketch to see how I wanted to pose him. Somehow it turned into a progression of him falling down.
I have also come to the realization that a newcomer, like myself, doesn’t have much of a chance. I am amazed by some of the work that is being posted. So for now, I am just hoping to learn a thing or two from some of the greats in this contest.

#5

Still working on the pose. I decided to develop this one further. It still looks too comical, so I am looking for ways to make it more dramatic.

#6

This is a slight change of concept. I am now going for a combination of a tree and machine. Trying to show the interdependency of both sides, and the struggle for domination. It is a nature vs. technology theme.
Let me know what you think,
Greg

#7

I just finished work on the Line Art. Once I start the coloring I will be adding vines and a lot more detail.
Let me know what you think, need some help since I’m still learning.
Thanks,
Greg

i like the latter theme

also , quite a jump in detail

speaking about flesh rejecting the machine
parts and experiments going wrong …

…happened to my cyberwarrior , take a look :

That’s great!!!:applause:
Looks like he is in a little bit of pain!
Thanks man!
Greg

#10

yea i guess , he refused to take part
in any of my future projects … oh well

#11

Personally I like the first idea, although I like where you are going with both ideas, nice to know that moral still exists.

#12

Started work on the Color. This is just rough color for now. I will be adding detail with each pass of color. The vines will be added next pass.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Greg

#13

flyingP: I liked the first idea as well, but I kinda ran into a dead end. Wasn’t sure where to go with it exactly. But I will probably revisit the first idea, just not for MachineFlesh.
Vielen Dank!!!
Greg

#14

Refining the color. I like this look better then the original on the leg. I will be changing the leg to something more like this.
Please let me know what you think,
Greg

#15

Just about done with the basic texture/color for the tree half. Working on the metal next.
Thank you for any advice!
Greg

good developing concept , about your coloring , I think you should not pay attention to very fine detail at this stage , you should make overall look ok ,because if you want to correct some point you have to do very fine detail again , anyway , just my work process , maybe you have your way ,
keep learning , so I will take this challenge for my learning too , and we are learining together ,

sorry for my english:p

Thanks monsitj, I would usually do just general color then add detail, but I am feeling the time crunch. I know what your saying we have more the two months left… well I have a full time non-graphic job that takes up most of my time, and this lovely job of mine is sending me to Korea for a year in the beginning of June. So I really need to get it done by late May, otherwise it ain’t getting done till July, when I get my computer to Korea, which of course will be too late. So I am just going for detail, hopeing I don’t have to go back and fix too much, or that I can fix it quick.
So yeah needless to say I am in a rush… but I am learning like crazy, feel like I am making a lot of progress each post. Might not look like it, but I see it, and that is what matters.
Don’t worry about english, mine is no good either.

Just getting the layout for the machine side. Establishing the depth of everything. I’ll start shading it next.
Thank you for any comments,
Greg

i saw your plane models, very cool. your second concept reflects that i think. your ink drawing is awesome. maybe u should explore a concept where the manufactured components play a more defining role. Something like using flesh/bark to cover skin of airplane frame, etc… ??

Your textures work well, especially tree-like areas.

#20

I think it’s a pretty good start, but the scaling of the limbs is what’s bothering me. I understand that your trying to get perspective, but since it’s humanoid the viewer can’t help but compare the shapes to real life.

#21

DIFFERENT!!! unique. great job.

Here is a quick update. Continuing to work out the coloring.

Chris: Thanks- I never thought to skin a plane with bark; I’m going to have to keep that in mind. Unfortunately I am quickly running out of time, my computer leaves for Korea on the 20th of May, and I don’t have enough time to start a new idea now. But once I am in Korea I will look into skinning a plane.
neble: It is partly perspective and partly trying to give him an almost odd look, like something isn’t right. Almost like he is really stocky, I might have overdone it a bit, but hopefully once I add the background it will look a bit more natural.
londero: Thank you. I am really hoping to make it even more different with a dramatic background, for which I am looking for suggestions. I probably should have thought about the background more before I started coloring, but it is a little late for that. Add that to the lessons learned during this project.
