Yeah, I went back to the eyes - I think I’ll tweak them a bit still, try some different sizes etc. Good suggestion though, it gives him more life.
Machineflesh 2D Challenge Entry: Daryl Mandryk
I think you’re submission looks great, but the reason I’m writing is because i clicked your site and read this " figured if that mountain climber from Touching the Void could drag himself all that ways with a broken leg, I could get stop being lazy and do some sketches." and yeah, I know exactly how you felt. That’s the kind of motivation i need right now. I love your web site design too.
You just sealed the deal with that last update D. I love those flames in there. Brought sooo much more to the pic.
I love your workflow. Even though you say it looks like crap at the begining it works. I think all you really need now on this one is to roughen it up a bit. Also the lighting on the beast seems a little bit odd. I think if you highlight the edges that are facing the lava? , especially around his rear end, right leg, and right hand then the lava? will look more convincing. Though I’m probably telling you something you already know.
Anyways, Great entry shakes fist you did an awsome job at capturing the action/energy . . . cheers:beer:
There’s still more updates to come, not quite finished with this one. I’m going to add a rim light like Smpleton suggested, and probably tweak the design of the mechanical bits a bit. I also have some more work to do on the hunter’s body and gun. There’s a few areas that still seem a bit flat to me that I need to make more 3D.
Thanks for the comments all.

:buttrock: Mybe a little splash of hot lava jumping at the viewer in the lower right corner will add some more tension…
And maybe a scar on the monsters face?!?
Awesome! Your piece has a very classic feel to it. Strong composition and brilliant colors! God, I haven’t even finished my lineart yet.
Looking wicked, bravo!
oh crap…this is good, wow, dang this is the first time i have seen your post, looks very good, best of luck
:applause:
Shoot, looks like my server’s down, my WIP has become a red X.
I’ve been having a lot of problems with Shaw lately…don’t these fools realize I have a contest to compete in! =P
edit; looks like its back!
Lava in the foreground- very cool!
Now, there’s a little thought I had… the man in front of the beast looks too “untouched”- maybe a few cuts on his arm and a rip in his pants, you know, like he’s been slammed a couple of times on those rocks…?
Just a thought…
Hey excellent work!!! I really like the creature, as well as the atmosphere. Also It looks better flipped. Kind of reminds me of artwork from the Heavy Metal books.
Great work once again :applause:
It looks much nicer flipped! I gotta say though, I am not sure how successful it is in communicating that the monster had taken a few shots. What if his gun left a blue-glowing projectile somewhere in the beast’s body? Maybe somewhere that increases the tension of the scene… …as though the guy with the gun shot someplace that makes sense when you want to kill a big machine beast like this but somehow it failed to do the damage he intended… …the chest, the nads, whatever
Very impressive and an immediate favorite of the ones I’ve seen so far. Love the colors!
