No that’s cool I’m still working on that, actually if you compare this with the last image I posted you’ll see I’ve already reworked the area around the shoulder/neck/back/chest, but you’re right and the stomach gets the next bit of attention.

hdri emailed me a suggestion over the colours as well, which I’ll upload in a few minutes (hrdi can’t host it, so it’s going on my web space) I’d be curious to hear what the rest of you think.

Ok here’s the colour suggestion hdri sent me before, (for which I am most thankful hdri)

if any of you guys have any suggestions along the same lines I’m curious to hear them, it’s helpful feedback.

Cheers

Oh and before I forget AlexDragutescu , I’ll give it a go

#243

how about something like in-between of the two ?

the latest pic with the layers now looks like there’s
some water between the “camera” and the creature ,
but I don’t wanna see it so pink

uhh…i mean it’s underwater so the new pic’s ok …just
wouldn’t want so much color change… then again the
new pic could be best…ye …it is…maybe too pink but yea…

nothing against pink…just in this occasion …

#244

thanks Squibbit , we’ll see I understand what hdri was getting at and I had planned another layer to go over the top with more blue tones hdri mentioned in his mail that this was just a quick attempt, and it is pushing a bit too far into the magenta tones (hence the pinkness) at the moment for my taste but the idea if fairly clear.

#245

Well done buddy! Much more impact on lighting. Since you have a strong cool hightlight (blueist), u could heat up the shadow toward warm a little more. Cool light = warm shadow, Warm light= Cool Shadow. My 2 cents, looking good!

Don’t be afraid of pink. Every colour is OK if it is in the right place.
Here is a pic of one of the most daring painters using colour:
Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, Spain, Impressionism
born 1863 - died 1923

It is one of the most powerful features of colour: the ability to work right or wrong with similar strenght. I already wonder how masters could use colour so easily…
Here is the link to the image, in case it does not allow linking:

i love the whole action packed set up.The intensity level is high, the design and style are wonderful…I would go for the more recent look,a little more deep in tone, and the intensity of the colors are more vibrant…just a fantastic piece os work…Really without getting technical I just think it looks beautiful…

#248

lol , hdri i already said i got nothing against pink
I know it’s good if it’s in the right place

and that Sorolla pic is so great ; I ain’t seen much
paintings of old but I never wouldve set that pic so far
back in time , It’s just too colorful… (and also relaxed)

thanks for the pic

Hmmm complementary colours, yeah used right they’re powerfull, get the mix wrong though and it’ll slap the hell out of your eyeball…with a brick…in a wet sock

this is nice ! the water effect is well done , great mouvement !

#251

I reckon the tonal adjustments on the water are great, but you could do with adding more green back in to some areas. The added contrast helps with the depth.

I’d agree with squibbit though…the figure has lost his flesh tones with the blue adjustments. If you could get some of the warmer pinks back in, i think it would be more ‘complimentary’ to the background.

#252

that bluer version was just a suggestion from hdri the greener version is my original and how it “still” looks.

#253

oh…i see…

#254

Just trying to resolve the lack of depth on his chest/stomach etc. …can’t say I’m finding it easy.

#255

“before / after” arg , starting to look like a bad commercial ,
anyways , maybe “after” looks a bit too lumpy ?

#256

It’s getting better, every time i see!
great job!!

#257

flyingP your work is going very well. I love the sense of atmosphere and overall mood that is being communicated in your piece. Great Job!!!

Brian,
I love what you have going…and I do have some suggetions since you are open to them.

The biggest thing for me is color harmony. I think that bringing 40% of the backgroud color would help…this will bring everything to the same place and tone down the hot spots. Also it evens out the background and make it a little darker. This make it feel like the creature is deeper in the water and is a more ominous setting. Then you can bring you highlights up again…It will allow you to have a slower , more refinded approach to modeling the light also. The bubbles could be toned down also if the light isn’t that strong…this helps with keeping your eye moving along the character… you could use them to your benifit…when move the eye around the composition…but I think it would help if they were subtle…I also thought more creature swimming in the abyss could help move your eye around the composition.

A soft blue reflected light from the bottom would help seperate the character from the background …at the bottom of the page were it is darkest. and add to the modeling of the characters form…

hope you like it.! You have a great piece.

I will forward a jpeg of these suggestions painted over your piece

Thanks for the input guys, just a small update here (the stomach again)

@ shawnalanpeters, there will be more blue coming into this in a layer that I plan to place over the top, just haven’t got around to doing it yet and there are a few things like the stomach (his other leg, the fish, one or two toes… :hmm: ) that I want to resolve before I do so.

Actually the bubbles were added with the intention of using them as a compositional element, but are still just a rough background layer ATM, more work will be going back into that later.

There may also be one or two other elements coming in to solve a few issues that no one’s really mentioned so far but which are bugging the hell out of me, but I’ll look into that later.

Cheers guys

Brian …do you have an email …so I can forward the image I painted over… I think you will appreciate the suggestions.
I forwwarded it to the adim… but I haven’t got a reponse…and I don’t know how to post it on your thread…( which I don’t think I can)
