mac crash

#1

i have just upgraded my ram from 1G to 3G on my intel mac but when i populate an ecosystem vue takes forever to populate. then the computer crashes for about 5 min at a time every time i move the mouse.

what’s going on? i am using the ple version though. could that have someting to do with it?

Could you give a bit more information? Wether there is a warning when you populate - about the amount of instances you will get. And what you use for items to make the ecosystem.

hi

thanx for rplying. here’s the message that pops up:

The ecosystem population is estimated to 1089708 instances. this will require a vast amount of resources nd your system may run out of memory. are you sue you want to create this ecosystem?

any ideas?

the ecosystem is populated by just one dry bush from the plant menu

ox. 2.500 polygons. So with your settings you have almost 3 billion polygons with only this ecosystem.

Looks like your system does exactly what Vue proposes - it run out of memory and crashes.

Maybe you try to increase yout items in the eco setting so that you get less instances. Then I am sure you will be able to handle the thing.

what do you mean by:

Maybe you try to increase yout items in the eco setting so that you get less instances.

…and how do i do it. i’m a total newbie. besies if i have 3G of memory how much do i need to handle this? __________________

increase the size of your plants or decrease the density, and there will be less plants to cover the same area…so your computer will have an easy time handling the amount and may not crash.

Another tip…dont populate the area of the scene that wont be seen by the camera.

You have two options (minimum) to increase the scale of your items in the ecosystem.

#1 go to the list of items that you use in the eco (first tab in the eco material editor) and change the scale value for each plant individually.

#2 go to the scale/orientation tab in the eco material editor and change the overall scale there. Default is 0.5, maybe you try 1 or highter.

It is difficult to say how much computer memory you would need to do what you wanted. For that there is no formula. But be assured, there is a limit for EVERY system. May it be as big as it wants to be. One part of digital artwork creation is always to find clever ways to make something look good - with as little resources as possible. This is one part that makes it so interesting in my eyes.
