LW to AM object import

#1

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me out with this. I’ve been trying to find a way to get LW models into AM. I found a post on here about setting the LW model’s sub’D level to 1 and exporting as a DXF. The problem I seem to be having is that when I then try importing the model into AM, the program crashes and won’t load the DXF file. Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong? I’m using version 9.5.

Thanks,

-Brian

OK, I downloaded and installed it, but isn’t showing up in AM. Where is it located?

Thanks,

Go to File> New> Model

With the model screen now open go back to File> Plug Ins> Import> LW6 Object

Sorry, I failed to mention that I’ve already tried that. I see options for importing DXF and 3DS models…but no LW6. Also, I placed the hxt file in my AM hxt folder. Is it possible that I’d need a newer version of AM? Again, I’m using ver. 9.5 (“C” I think…but I could be wrong).

Thanks for the replies,

Could be. Im using V11 and it works just fine.

Well, since I can’t seem to get mine to work, could you tell me if the models look OK coming into AM? My biggest reason I haven’t upgraded yet is because I don’t like modeling in AM and would rather model in LW. If I could get a decent looking model from LW to AM, that would be reason enough for me to upgrade.

Thanks!

OK, I downloaded a patch to 9.5 and was able to export a Frozen SubD model from LW with it’s subdivision level set to 1. It imported into AM as a DXF. I then changed all the splines to smooth (or whatever the opposite of “Peak” is) and applied the porcelian shader to it. It looks pretty good, but still has wierd, black rendering artifacts all over the place (mostly in corners). Basically, it DOESN’T look as nice as it did in LW. Any advice?

My pipe plan is to go LW-AM-LW. I wont be rendering in AM so I havent been really caring too much how it looks and renders in AM. Sorry, I cant be much help in making LW models look good in AM.

There is a thread just below this one that is discussing this very pipe if you are intersted.

For me personally I upgraded for stability alone to v11 from v9.
