LW 9.6 on MAC install question

#1

Hi all,
I just switched to MAC and I downloaded the MAC version and obtained a new license key from Newtek customer service. Now I have some questions because I can’t get it out of Discovery mode.

  1. I have a MacBook Pro (only 3 months old) with Leopard X - which MAC version do I download? The universal binary or the PPC one?

  2. After download there was no install icon. I just unzipped it and it seemed to be installed. IS that right? (Guess I am use to windows for so long)

  3. How do I enter my license key. I read the readme file and it says go to the Library>Applications> LW, but I dont have the file. Did LW really install?

Sorry for such binehead questions but I cannot figure it out.

Thanks,
Pesto

1 - you need the Universal Binary. This contains both the Intel (what you have) and the PowerPC version. If you got a version that was just Intel, that’s fine (it’s also better since it doesn’t have code in it for the PPC version that you don’t need.) Apple hasn’t made a PowerPC machine in years and Snow Leopard (the next OS) will be Intel only.

2 - most Mac programs don’t have installers. You either unzip or mount a virtual disk (.dmg) and move the files to /Applications (it doesn’t have to be there to run). Similarly, you can just trash the Application folder and the OS will realize that it’s gone (file associations, etc). There is no registry in the Mac OS so stuff works fine this way. There may be preference files (stored in your Library folder) still left over but they are usually small enough.

3 - I don’t know. I’m not a LW user.

If you want a good Mac forum for other Mac questions, there is one here ( http://episteme.arstechnica.com/6/ubb.x?f=8300945231&s=50009562&a=frm )

Once you unzip, you probably will see a file with extension .dmg at the end… Run this should mount a virtual drive on your desktop.

If you double-click on this drive, you should get a window that tells you to drag your files to Applications. Just click on LightWave and Drag it across to the Applications folder in this window. Simple as that… This will copy it into the right place.

To install your license.key file
[ol]
[li]Make a text file (Applications > Textpad (I think, I don’t have my Mac at home, just at work))[/li][li]Paste your license key into here.[/li][li]Save it, then rename it to license.key. Say ‘Yes’ when asked if you really want to change the Extension. The file will likely change to a ‘Keynote’ application icon. Don’t panic… :D[/li][li]Under the Go menu (I think, again I’m going from memory) at the top of the desktop, select Applications to open the App’s folder.[/li][li]Find the LightWave9.6 folder, open it and copy the license.key file into the Shared folder… Then LW should work (hopefully)[/li][/ol]Good luck.

I am new to the Mac side of things also. Installed LW as listed above, however when installing the Sentinel drivers make sure the dongle is not plugged in, otherwise will not install properly. I believe there were three folders to install by dragging as above.

To enter my license I went in Layout to help and install license and worked just like a win machine.
Wrote the license file in the programs directory and most likely wherever else it needs to reside in Mac land. Hope that helps.
