Looking for someone to help with a personal project

#1

I’m not sure if this belongs here, but the stickies didn’t seem to say anything about looking for unpaid help. If this is in the wrong place I’ll gladly take it down and post somewhere else. That being said…

I’m looking for someone that’s interested in creating assets for a game I’ve been making. I’m doing all of the programming myself as of now, and while I’d love to just take a few weeks and do a bunch of modeling, I’d rather get all of the mechanics/systems nailed down. I’m wondering if anyone has any spare time and would like to contribute to what I think is a cool project.

The game is basically a dungeon-crawler, only instead of slaying monsters to collect weapons or armor, you’re visiting art galleries and meeting art collectors to find rare paintings to add to your collection. All of your paintings can then be placed in a customized gallery of your own, which other players can visit. I’ve already built a system that will take a few obj files and convert them into a “gallery”, where paintings can be hung and finished/furniture can be modified, but I’d really like it if someone could just make 10-20 “gallery templates” to add some variety. I also need miscellaneous models for furniture and ambiance. The designs can be really simple and straight-forward, the one I’ve been using until now is only 4 rooms and a few benches. The video below is a progress demo I made to show some of the functionality, but it gives a general idea of where the project is right now.

Just to be clear, I’m not looking to hire anyone. I’m looking for someone that thinks the idea is decent and has a little bit of time on their hands. Obviously if/when the project has a little more substance that’ll be a different story, but for right now this is just a pet project, and it’d be cool to collaborate with someone.

If anyone is interested I can provide specific instructions on how models should be formatted to be usable. They need to abide by a few basic rules to be properly read by my program.

I shall be interested !
Can you describe the project furthermore ?
And do you have any graphical references, images you like; that could show what kind of rendering you’re looking after ?

All of the rendering will be done in-game (unless I eventually decide to bake textures, which I might), so there’s actually no need to worry about rendering style/quality. All I really need is the geometry.

Here are the prerequisites:

The models have to be in OBJ format, and all surfaces have to be triangulated.

For each gallery template there needs to be at least 3 models: one for the display walls, one with the “filler”, and one with the floor. The files need to be named like so:

<template name>_display.obj
<template name>_filler.obj
<template name>_floor.obj

The “display” file can ONLY contain surfaces that are vertical, and each wall has to be a separate mesh within the model. So the mesh itself can’t have multiple walls at different angles. The file can contain multiple meshes, but each wall should have its own mesh (it can have multiple faces as long as they’re all in-line vertically). As you can probably guess, these are the walls that are capable of receiving paintings.

The “floor” file is, wait for it… the floor. It has to be a single mesh, but can have multiple faces as well, however, it CANNOT go through the walls. Basically the outer edges of the floor are going to determine where furniture can be placed, and we don’t want furniture to be sticking through walls.

The “filler” model is everything else in the gallery that’s non-interactive. Door frames, wall bases, any other little details that are modeled but don’t need to be selected or interacted with.

I know it sounds like a lot of guidelines, but the modeling process is actually really simple. You just have model the gallery, then separate the walls that get paintings, then separate the floor, then save each grouping as an individual .obj file.

If you have any more questions, please ask away. Better yet, if you could show me some of the stuff you’ve done before, that’d be awesome. Thanks for the reply!

here’s a lowpoly i used for a background in a last project:

So ok for the workflow, if i understood:
-one for the walls: display
-one for the floor: floor
-one for the misc objects: filler
correct ?
Aren’t you going to have texturing issues if you put, let’s say, a lamp and a bench in the same obj ? Never did gaming before so i don’t know.

Does your game have a background story ? Does it take place now, in the past or future ?
I think any game should have a background, and i need to know details of it before i start.
