I am trying to do a painting of the crucifixion, but have been having a hard time finding images that will help me get the anatomy correct. Can anyone help?

marD,

Start by Googling “Crucifixion” + art. Most of Western art history at least revolves around / was commissioned by the church.

Google various artists. Anyone Renaissance artist in particular will have a plethora of religious work to their credit.

Try these Renaissance artists:

  Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)
  Buonarroti, Michelangelo (1475-1564)
  Bosch, Hieronymus (1450-1516)
  Dürer, Albrecht (1471-1528)
  Raphael [Raffaello Sanzio] (1483-1520)
  Botticelli, Sandro (1445-1510)
  Bellini, Giovanni (c.1426-1516)
  Bruegel, Pieter the Elder (1525-1569)
  van Eyck, Jan (1395-1441)
  Donatello (1386-1466)
  Angelico, Fra (1400-1445)
  Francesca, Piero della (1416-1492)
  Vecellio, Tiziano "Titian" (1485-1576)
  Holbein, Hans the Younger (1497-1543)
  Correggio (1489-1534)
  Giorgione (c.1477-1510)
  Giotto (1267-1337)
  Uccello, Paolo (1397-1475)
  Mantegna, Andrea (1431-1506)
  Ghirlandaio, Domenico (1449-1494)
  Brueghel, Jan the Elder (1568-1625)
  Veronese, Paolo (1528-1588)
  Ghiberti, Lorenzo (1378-1455)
  della Robbia, Luca (1400 - 1482)
  Cellini, Benvenuto (1500 - 1571)
  Altdorfer, Albrecht (1480-1538)
  Rosa, Salvator (1615-1673)
  Verrocchio, Andrea del (1435-1488)
  della Querica, Jacopo (1367-1438)
  Pollaiolo, Antonio del (c.1431-1498)
  Burgkmair, Hans the Elder (1473-1531)

(List from here, the links aren’t in themselves helpful, I would just Google names / images)

Would this http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/25860748/ help at all? It was something I was asked to do and did a little while ago. It was well received (on deviantart), but I think it could have been better. I actually also did a fully nude version that I thought turned out a little better, but the response to it on deviantart was practically nothing, so I subsequently deleted it (just from there). I’ve recently also been requested to do a backlit (and draped) version, that I hope to work on within the next couple of weeks. No doubt Rebecca’s mentioned references will be infinitely better, but I thought I’d throw it out there anyway. It’s pretty “real” if nothing else (lol).

Wow, Ben, that’s perfect! Thanks!

what a wonderful pose, Ben!

I wouldn’t even restrict this to crucifixion, actually. Transports a very dignified and humble mindset, in general.

Thanks Rebecca and Mr. Mu, I appreciate the kind words! Hopefully the image will be useful for something. I don’t believe the original requestor has made use of it, although there has been one quick sketch by another artist.

Rebecca- Thanks for all the artists. I love Renaissance art and didn’t have that many artists to choose from. I’ve googled til my eyes hurt but didn’t come up with a whole lot that was usable. I’m planning on posting the pic as my first WIP(maybe this afternoon), so be ready to spam yet another thread! :scream:

justmeina- That’s a great starting pic for me! Thanks. I have been going through my copy of the Passion trying to find shots that would help but it’s not that easy… Thanks again!

Thanks MarD, I do hope it helps. If I can attempt any other shots that might help you, please let me know. I often don’t quite get what I’d like (to say nothing of what somebody else might like, ), but I’m quite willing to try.
