Looking for critique on an environment.

#1

Hello all,

I’m new to the CGSociety forums, this is my first post; nice to meet everyone. :keenly:

I am a student who is currently enrolled in a 3D Graphics program in Canada, and for one of my courses my teacher requires us to post a piece of artwork online for critique. This is the first time I’ve done something like this, so I am a little nervous, but excited :arteest: (And yes, the piece is 2D, haha)

I rarely try environments (I am generally a character artist), so I thought it would be a good piece to put up for critique so that I may improve my environments.

Thanks in advance, I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

It seems your image didn’t have the perspective planned out and the sense of scale is off too. Did you draw out the perspective lines first and make sure everything looks logical and credible?

The overall scene doesn’t look like there’s cohesive lighting. Did you plan out where the light source(s) is(are) in relation to the entire environment (including the main subject in the foreground)? If you need a crash course on lighting basics, this is a great place to get started: http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm

You should take some time and learn how to customize brushes, so you can create more organic looking brushwork with variety of different textures, including convincing looking impression of foliage without having to paint them on tiny brushstroke at a time. Try the different types of brushes, especially the organic looking ones with different textures, to mimic amorphous shapes. Experiment with the various parameters like scattering, spacing, opacity control with pen pressure, size jitter, etc. You’ll create much better brushwork if you utilized those parameters.
