The last one is MUCH better, and not because the lighting is different, but because the lighting is better, and more interesting as well.
Anyway, I think there are some zones that still look too dark. Add some more lights…

i like it!!!
as said, try adding more subtle lights (perhaps a skylight from above simulating the star light ?)
and give the yellow light a warmer tone, right now it seems to come from carlights, make it more fire-like!(unless you want it to look that way, it could be cool… the guy doesn’t even want to light a fire!!)

I have a couple of suggestions, I made a repaint of your pic in PS to show you.

it’s mainly some DOF(gaussian in PS) to the sky and sea, to put you and your ‘fishTools’ in focus. as that’s the main importance in the scene, at least for me.
also sharpened up your face a little to add to that effect.
I also added a slightly blue tint to the image(in PS, colorBalance, midtones: -40, -20, +50) to make it a little calmer and more relaxing. as that’s seams to be one of your hobby to 
ofcourse nothing you have to do if you don’t wan’t to, just ideas. good work so far,

This update is for you, well plugins wont work in current wersion of Blender and it take some twaeking to open it in older one, but i made it for you and for DOF, i allso made my lights little cooler. Virtuoso: Have you somekind obsession about that jumping fish:) , just kidding. I might just do that if i have time and you stole my idea about that little fish in bucket. What comes to those labels for bottles, well since textures are forbitten, i think that it’s not worth it to model them:D
I’m not sure if this is step foward, should i change lights back? And those new eyes(for some odd reason i had to make them) are too “sharp” and takes some charisma away i think. Well i keep tweaking and you keep that crit coming so we can make smethin out of this mess, ok?
really great! I tried to find something else to crit, but couldn’t. just add some small things like the fish in the bucket etc… and I think it will be even better.
hope you’ll get around to texture it a little after the challenge to, I think textures in this lighting will make it just perfect.

I made few little changes and added fishing line and lil fish. Fish seems little odd, but i’m working on it. I’m not sure about DOF, ill give it a try when i work out everything else, it’s pain in tha butt to tweak and render in my crappy pc(Celeron 566@850), but i’m getting there.
Need comments about DOF or not DOF?

About DOF, I don’t think it’s that important if you have it if its gonna be a hassle.
defintely getting better and better. i really like the new lighting and the stars.
dof would be okay but be carefull not to eliminate the stars cause without them itll be rather plain. and what about the moon? the grey circle shadow on it rather strange, i dunno its just me.

the fishing pic is cool, nice DOF and the stars make that scene more alive. i like the drunken santa as well:p (maybe next time you can do your toon as jackie chen’s drunken master?) and that 3 Pojus in the lower, their eyes always looking to the camera thats scary LOL
