Lighting Challenge #29: Pixar Tribute: Gusteau's Kitchen (Ratatouille)

One important skill in lighting is being able to match the look and feel of a render to a backplate, another shot, concept art, photograph, film, etc…

Recently from one of CGSociety’s Hardcore Modeling Challenges, Pixar Tribute, A participant by the name of Sapna Mondol has graciously donated a tribute scene of Gusteau’s Kitchen from Pixar’s film, Ratatouille. Your goal for this challenge is to collect reference images and then replicate a similar look to a scene in the film. This is not an easy task by any means, the original kitchen took many artists an incredible number of hours to complete. You will have about 3 months to complete this challenge, April 22nd 2012.

[li]Since the film Ratatouille is property of Pixar I ask that you do not post any images or videos from the film in this thread. I will have to remove them if you do.

I was astounded while watching that movie- totally caught in by the CG. Had to watch it again to get the story. lol

I had downloaded both files, and much to my dismay neither were able to be opened with the programs I have. I did dl Maya and will try to make an .obj export file. Though as old as my computer is, I don’t know if it’s going to like it. I’d like to try this one out- three months is a good amount of time to work on things.


I’m sorry to hear that DarwinsMishap. Is anyone else having the same issue? I’d like to sort any problems out as soon as I can.


It’s not a big issue; someone had been kind enough to provide me with an .obj file from the last challenge even though I ended up not having the time to sit down and work on it. I will try tonight to see if I can convert it. Thank you for responding, however!


Fredduck has been nice enough to convert the scene to MAX2012. I’ve added the link to the first post in this thread.

He also wanted me to let you know the camera in the scene he converted is for POV purpose only to match the view of the thread.



kanooshka I don’t know if is possible. But can you open the Maya file and save using the normal viewport? I’m asking this because when I open the file in Maya 2012 the viewport 2.0 crash and I don’t have the chance to change to Default Quality.



I just replaced the file with a new version using the standard viewport. Try redownloading and let me know if that works better.

I’ve found how to turn on the .obj file exporter in Maya, if I can get my computer to convert it over I will PM you Dan and let you know so I can provide the file if you’d like?


You’re more than welcome to try. I originally tried to get an OBJ file exported but it wasn’t working correctly. Make sure to test importing the scene after exporting, I was finding missing geometry when importing the OBJ version.


I’m tryin’ that’s for sure. I’ll make sure to do a test run prior. I’ll let you know.


Well, I tried three times to export the entire file into an obj file and I am still missing a majority of the models. I’m going to see if my friend can do it for me instead- I can’t keep Maya on this system, it’s killing my cranky computer.


The FBX seemed to import without major issues to Modo 501 - usually the models for the challenges entail major polygon-flipping when importing - but looks to be good this time :thumbsup: (apart from the magical, floating plates :slight_smile: )

With mostly default Modo materials, 22 IES lights and 2 area lights plus GI

Lots to tune, but it’s a start.
Not sure what goes on with the brick-wall texture, probably a scaling issue.


Model works great as a maya .ma. really excited for this one, it’s always been my all time favorite animated movie
