Lighting Challenge #23: (Final Images) Mad Science

#1

Edit: this is an old challenge now and this thread has been archived. If you would like to download the models please go to the vault thread

This thread is for final image submission for Challenge #23 Mad Science. The deadline for this challenge is July 30th, 2010

Since this thread is what the judge will choose from I’d like to keep this thread very clean, so here are some rules I’d like to set:

[ul]
[li]Please post final images only, if you make changes you can edit your post.
[/li][li]Try not to fill this thread with feedback, that’s what the WIP thread is for.
[/li][li]You can post more than one image, but please don’t post the same image more than once
[/li][li]Post final images by replying to this thread
[/li][/ul]

Enjoy!

“It dies at DAWN!!”. Small-size forum preview of my final image for “Mad Science” challenge, Summer 2010:

Full-size 1920 x 1200px version is at:

http://myclone.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/it-dies-at-dawn.jpg

Before the pro Maya users start pointing and laughing, please note that this was rendered in a game engine. iClone 4 to be specific, which is a $200 machinima production software that uses a game-engine to enable “what you see is what you get” rendering in real-time. You don’t have the same level/range of control as you do with Maya/Blender/Max etc, so I’ve just made the lighting dramatic rather than ultra-realistic.

3D models by Dan Konieczka and Giorgio Luciano, and the background loft model is a DAZ model by RPublishing, decimated and converted for iClone. I also used several 2D semi-opaque image planes ripped from the open-source game Ryzom (e.g. the bubbles in the big flask, the light rays coming through the windows). I used Photoshop for some of the finishing touches, such as the electro-chemical whisps of gas around the globe, the faint stains on the workbench, the water-drop on the cage drinker, and a couple of small shadows (iClone is rather bad at doing shadows).

Enjoy!

Hi there,

After a couple of WIP uploaded and a large number of R&D, I finally got the effect that I was looking for. I know that this is not the best but for now this is the final one.

I got few comments on my WIP and tried to improve it but due to official work load I could not give enough time for this , so here is the Final Image.

Comments and Critics are most welcome.

Regards
Chirag Parmar

Okay, here goes…

Rendered with Thea render.

Emphasis was on soft lighting, caustics and rendering the Tesla orb.

Modeled by Dan Konieczka and Giorgio Luciano, I added a few of my own models like the lava lamp, Bugs Bunny, etc.

My final work done in Maya 2008 & After effects.

This is the best I could achieve as I’m in running out of time on my other projects.

Hoping to get all set for the next challenge.

Thanks once again for the models and feedback., it was really helpful.
