Lighting a room from the window

Greetings,
I wish to create a gloomy effect inside a room using a light from the window. My tool for this is Blender (which is not important atm). What is however, that I tried this with an area light as well as a spot light and I didn’ quite get the effect I need.
According to your experiences, how to achieve an effect like this? If you could provide a screenshot from any software, I would be ever so grateful.
