Light from within...

#1

Imagine you wanted a glowing ball that actually emits light and lights the scene.
I tried putting a point light inside a sphere, however the mesh blocks the light. I can use the glow special effect to make the sphere glow, but that doesn’t actually emit light to light my scene. How can I make the sphere not only glow, but cast light as well?

Thank you for suggestions.

[Reference: I’m making a 3D Pac Man scene in which the little yellow dots the Pac Man eats actually light the corridors.]

I forgot to mention, I’m using Maya 2011.

Couple of ways you can do it but plugging a mia_light_surface into additional color of a material_x shader if probably going to give you the result you are looking for.

Cant you just turn off cast shadows on the ball ?

Ah, how often the solution is so simple!
I learned something new today, light linking. All I had to do is unlink the ball from the light. Don’t even have to turn off the cast shadows on the ball. So simple, but yet another thing in Maya which I never touched before. Thanks for the learning experience.

Glad you got it sorted. You might still want to turn off cast shadows. If the ball is a bright light source it probably wont cast shadows.
