Learning How to Draw, A Journal by warpy

#21

specifically to what ? gesture doodles, spheres ?
because if you are refering to those doodles, they need to be messy, contours should not be the focus at all!

#22

Ohhh sorry! Of course they are gestures, stupid me. Sorry I wasn’t paying full attention when i wrote that comment, that’ll teach me :scream:

Great work  I need to practice more gesture drawings myself.

#23

great doodles. speaking of cleanout, something you might try is to find the dynamiclines as well, curves where they run out and in around a shape, sketch in a light color for example lightblue, then finding outlines in black and do a 3rd tone, a bit a darker blue for the shades

great to post your progress i’ll have an eye on this, so keeep on it

#24

Hey, nice work, keep pushing yourself, I like your gesture drawings.

Hi warpy,

Good to see your update ~ it looks like you are learning a lot.

This may look familiar ~ very similar to the Traditional Shading Tutorial Thread ~ but I’ve revamped it as a Workshop (the other thread still exists, independently) and I hope that you might be able to participate (in your own time) in this Workshop:
WORKSHOP - Drawing Exercises to Try - Traditional Media Only

Cheers,

class was cancelled last week so i had the time to drew some more, its not much but the spheres are getting easier
i actually have better stuff but i’ll post it later on.

Hi …Warpy…:applause: Looks like you have been working hard at the basics…can’t go wrong there…GREAT JOB…
I was just thinking of a great little book that I used to have…it was AIR BRUSH TECHNIQUES.
In that book they had some really great examples of how to do spheres, and other basic shapes…You might find a book simaler to that book that I just mentioned at the library or
somewhere…could be of a great help to you…know it was to me, when I was taking a class
years ago in air brush…just a thought that might be of some help to you.
Keep at it, and just watch the improvements happen as time goes by.

so you ask what happened from the last time ?
quite a lot actually, i have had 2 lessons and i have done some homework,

in lesson #5 i will explain how to measure objects that you look at, this method will help us understand what PRESPECTIVE is.

i have tried to draw flat objects and simple chairs, in the next example you will see first attemps at doing those flat objects.

you can clearly see that this chair 2 horizons points that you can use to build your prespective grid (i hope thats the right term) at this point i wont mention prespective much, a lot has been written on it so its probably best to find the detailed info regarding prespective else where, instead i would concentrate on measuring, here is the prespective as i saw it while drawing.

this is the point where i’ll do my best and explain how to do all the measuring, the method requires you to hold a pencil in a perfect horizontaly or verticaly and for each edge you see on the shape you are drawing find out how much they size up and related to each other, we measure the distances from each other, we measure the angles (doesnt have to be exact but has to look the same), we make sure it follows the prespective invisible lines.

here is an example :

#29

okay, so we made it this far, in this lesson I had to draw negative space and measure it, the following picture will explain everything.

FIRST ATTEMPS:

OTHER ATTEMPS :

TODAY’S DRAWING :

AS YOU CAN SEE, things are better now, but what i realy hate about this is squinting my eyes so much.
it hurts badly… so on with the next lesson

#30

i did not stop doodling and gesture drawing, here are some of the results.

#31

so what is modelling, its not what you think it is, its not about 3d. the general idea is to put more graphite on parts of the objects which are farther away from you, its not about light, or proper shading, its just about the pressure you put on the pencil to make farther parts of the objects appear far. yea its simple as that.

i will probably elaborate more on this in the following weeks.

cheers.

#32

warpy,

I admire your earnest efforts here, and it’s nice to see your progress and to read your thoughts. Keep pushing yourself and your understanding of what you are doing when you are drawing. I really think that the book “The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” would nicely accompany and complement your studies.

#33

thanks becca,

i already saw the movie heh, there is a version of the book in vhs. but comparing what i saw in the the movie and what i am learning, the book is for total newbs heh

today i decided to watch war of the worlds again, i tend to watch movies and if i see that one of the actors is in a good pose i will try to keep it in my head and draw it on the paper,
today i did a whole lot of gesturing and than after the movie ended i went back over them and tried to darken the parts that are farther away from me, i am very pleased with the results.

i have attached 2 pics, the first shows the results i am most pleased with.the second one shows gestures i liked less
in the second pic anything circled in black is good. in the first pic anything circled in red is bad while the rest is cool enough to be proud of.

warpy,

Good to see your progress! I hope you might find a little time to participate in the ongoing Workshop:

Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 1 - The Head

It’s a great chance to practice!

Cheers,

i would love to buy i made a promise to myself not to do anything not related to what my teachers wants me to draw, you know how much i love drawing heads but first i gotta push in the direction he gave me.

thanks for the offer, cheers.

#37

i am gonna stick to modelling the next few weeks, try to incorporate some measuring and gestures with it.

some improvements in my sketching imo.

pillow, rough gesturing, modelling.

some primitives, modelling.

#38

warpy,

Nice progress here, I see definite improvements. One thing I recommend is trying not to scribble ~ always create strokes that follow the contour of the topology and are smooth ~ this really directs your eye over the form and the overall experience of looking at the image is nicer. Looking forward to seeing your next update ~ keep up the good work!

Cheers,

so i am at a stage where i need to use my hand freely and figure out how to do better modelling. the front side of the monkey looks kind of nice, even though the outcome is good or getting better from other attempts, compared to the back side of the monkey picture its not as alive, of course the back side isnt finished yet but you get the picture :stuck_out_tongue:

at this point i would like to add that i am realy into this whole modelling thing. its realy fun and i will probably do a few more lessons with it. until its … well i’d like to think it will be a second nature to me

warpy,

Wow, I think you’ve made a lot of progress with this one ~ you’ve nicely captured the dimensionality of the doll, and I think you’re really showing nice advancement in your drawing ability ~ it’s good to see you’re working hard.

Cheers,
