Learning How to Draw, A Journal by warpy

#172

so here it is, about 12-16 hours (i lost track of time).
what i wanted to achieve here is to match the hues as close as i can without color picking,
to get the proportion right and get busy detailing some parts, the nipples were pretty herd until i figured out what to do (thanks lin)
i can work on it more to achieve the perfect perfect realism and likesness, but whats the point ? its already 85% close imo.
and lastly get the whole photoshop painting with opacity on pen pressure idea.

i saved progressed shots of the session. i will make an animatable gif out of it and post it soon.

First off nice work on this one Warpy. Getting really close to the oryginal.
Some tips:

  • Head seems slighly skewed to the right.
  • ear ends slighty higher than the ory.
  • lips need to end earlier. the ends go too much into the head
  • not sure but the light on the neck near the ear could be due to a caustics effect…with no earring there’s nothing to deflect light there…
  • I’d slightly boost the contrast in the darker areas, around the neck and shoulders…

Well enough ranting. It’s mostly just slight details needed to be fixed here and there and the pic will be really accurate

Great work here warpy, you KILLED this one.

gorgious work, man.
Also, terrific work on face likeness!
Will you add the bracelet? I think it would add a nice eye-catcher to the whole thing.

One thing I find when looking at it is that the work on the hair is kinda lagging behind in awesomeness compared to the value work on the body.

Not that it’s actually worth picking on…

But I find my eyes going back to the hair and comparing it to the original. There’s actually not that big a difference.
Maybe, if you added a few more layers of strand underneath the lightest one to break up the light on the most dominant ones. And, what might help the most and is quite easy to do:

In the photo, the hair is within the DOF and quite sharp, while the hair in the painting is a bit fuzzy. OTOH, widespread sharpness in a painting is not attractive, so I suggest maybe adding one or two really hard edged strands to suggest enough sharpness for the whole hairdo.

See, now we’re pushing you from great to immaculate…:scream:

fantastic progress, man.

hey mu,

yeah there are lots of things that i potentially need to work out to make this a 1:1 copy or close, but i am kind of tired and i achieved my goals.

the way i would go at the hair, is to blur it a bit using the blur brush and add those stands you mentioned… but … tired heh

i have a ready made sentence for someone like you who asked about the jewelry
“in my opinion a woman should not wear anything but her skin” :stuck_out_tongue:

@yiorgos thanks man, i am glad you like it

agreed. It’s better to leave something you are happy with than to come up with something that just ruins it all (though that is not as dangerous in digital as in traditional).

shave off her hair, then…
I am all for eye-catchers… (and there’s a wide range of them out there… Leaving you with this to give you something to think about…:scream:

so with this piece i wanted to achieve proportion, gesture, see if my brush skills can look detailed with rough strokes.

the only colors i picked were from the girl in the ref. no tracing.

2.5 hours a study of jason chan’s drizzt
after watching his concept art sketch and his usage of painter X brushes i decided to see if those brushes fits me. it was smooth sailing from then on.

i have no idea, i just copy from real life. its actually the first attempt at something with colors. for the last couple of months i have just been observing how colors behave in real life. no actual painting. i guess some of this has rubbed off onto me. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey warpy, I’d suggest working from a darker background to eliminate that glaring white. Also something is odd with the mouth - it’s too generic and angular at this point. Good start, are you going to continue with this?
