Well for me it means understanding the world around me enough that I can express it myself. Artists pull from life for inspiration because it’s source of ideas is limitless and authentic. My personal skills have been progressing because of some heavy study in anatomy and color fundamentals. The more you dig the more “tools” you will have at your disposal when you create works. Regarding anatomy I noticed a huge shift in forms between when I would just draw something because it looked right or like a reference vs. when I was actually understanding how a form was constructed.
Gesture drawing can help you find interesting poses and more natural positions as well, with your example posted it looks like the bipeds right shoulder is dislocated. Even though it is a fictional form, it still should have logical construction behind it. I am definitely like you when it comes to hands, they are hard as hell to get right and it’s so tempting to make a quick fist shape to hide the fingers or open form where they can be spread out without overlap. Instead take on the challenge, draw them over and over. I am still pretty awful at hands and feet myself but progressing. Many of my peers have sketchbooks for drills like feet or hands, I am going to get started in it as well to improve. Just get a book and draw your own hands in various positions each day or week even if its just a quick 10-20 minute session over time you will vastly progress.
Lastly keep sharing, whether or not you get responses its great practice to keep showing yourself for critique and progress at least in the end you will have a trail of work to look back on and see how you improved.
