hey Archangel, i hvnt tried rigging in 3DS Max, but will try to help u with the concept that u may try for ur setup… i use this one from Jason Schleifer’s rigging DVD n it might help u…
the main idea is that the base arm is controlled either by an Ik or an Fk arm… (nothing fancy till now, right…!! )… now, in ik arm, we’ll have a choice of keeping our forearm in Fk or Ik mode… this, i think may solve ur problem…
-in ur regular Ik arm, put a controller on the elbow (which u’ll be using as a pivot) and another for the wrist.
- parent this wrist controller under the elbow controller so that when u rotate the elbow controller, the wrist controller moves with it jst as in regular FK arm…
- now we have to tell the Ik handle whether to follow the arm in complete IK mode or in partial IK mode i.e. IK arm with forearm in FK mode. So for that, u may parent the ik handle under any node (locator, group etc) and then have that node constrained with wrist control of Full Ik arm and Partial IK arm (i.e. IK arm with forearm in FK mode)
you can use the elbow controller as the pole vector for controlling the elbow in complete IK arm…
Now u have a choice of keeping the Ik forearm in Ik or FK mode, keeping the overall arm in Ik…
this may sound complicated but believe me, if u get the point, its jst a piece of cake…
hope this helps u… let me know if i got it correct…
