Laura Diehl's WIP Thread

#381

This is just gorgeous Laura. My favorite so far!

#382

RalphD: Thanks!

#383

aww, that brings a smile to my face. I’m not sure how the lamp is supposed to function yet, though.
It reminds me a bit of the CocaCola polar bears.

#384

It’s really, really beautiful and sweet.
The idea is great, colors too. I think you only have to manage the composition : I can’t see what she is looking at. It seems that this object is out of the pic’s right border.

Looking forward for updates,
Serena.

This is by far my fav image of yours… even in its unfinished state. Probably has something to do with me loving human-animal relations, but the eyes on the bear are just so damn cute, I love the stylization of it, the colours are cool, aside from the touch of pinks on the nose and ears (which I’ve always been fond of), and just the whole thing really does make one smile…

#386

TimonQ: I’m not either.

CyborgJA: I was thinking that the kid was looking at a map and the critter was looking at the sky.

cypherx: Not even remotely a bear. Though I can’t blame you for having never heard of a Colugo. Glad you like it.

Still a ways to go, especially as far as proper textures for the rocks, snow, and fur.

#387

The textures and lighting already look fantastic before finished.

You still need to address that lamp though.

#388

you know, the funny thing is, I HAVE in fact heard of colugos. I had no idea they got that big though… sorry it just looked more like a polar bear to me shrugs

either way, it’s cute. I agree with the lamp lighting, you’ll definitely need to address it

#389

wow love the style of block and the image harmony

#390

RalphD: I know I know… I’m trying to think up a cool design.

cypherx: Quite alright. Might have been the white fur, the snow, and the size that threw you.

Gisaiagami: Why thank you

#391

A map! Great idea
Waiting for new steps,
Serena.

So, I’ve found a new love: painting rocks. Actually, I’m kidding, but I did spend much more time on them than I had anticipated >_<. I wanted to share an awesome site I found for snowy mountain type reference pictures. This guy is apparently into back country skiing in some truly gorgeous mountains (mostly ranges in Nevada I think):

Other than the rocks and snow, I worked mostly on detailing the colugo’s fur. I think it is looking better and mostly done, tough I may add a few more random bits of fur and some patterning.

CyborgJA: Yes, I think I will have curled up parchment edges visible at some point.

#393

This latest work is looking very nice. I like the intricate work in the fur.
Excuse my ignorance but what is a colugo?

“What is a Culogo”

Google is our friend:

#395

Duh… :banghead: what was I thinking?!
Thanks all the same.

#396

Thanks Tatiana =) Yes Google is our friend. It’s hard to recall life before Google…

I think the front paws need more work, what do you all think needs changing on 'em?

#397

I have a hunch this is almost done. What do you all think? Any “issues” you can think of?

#398

The colugo and the girl look great.
I think the starry sky clashes too much with the foreground for attention. Perhaps you could reduce the size and brightness of those stars? Removing the large ones really helped, but they’re still a bit too noticeable.

#399

Looking nice! Definitely just about done.

While interesting, I would suggest significantly dimming or even getting rid of the nebula or whatever the bright starry burst is over to the upper left. It definitely fights with your two characters as eishiya mentioned. Since you don’t have a rim of light along the rocky side, you aren’t leading your viewers’ eyes back down to the pair below.

The paws could use some more definition…although I realize yours also has quite a furry coat since it is living in a cold climate which could possibly mean rather heavily furred fingers. Possibly. One illustrated reference I found had distinctive webbing between the fingers; the photo reference I found didn’t show that. The sugar glider or flying squirrel while not a lemur also has the skin for gliding…its fingers are more separated as well (3rd ref).

Might also revisit the reflected light on the back of the snow colugo’s paw…it’s very close to the same coloration as the side that’s getting the light directly cast from the lantern…I would think it would be much darker, and slightly cooler in tone since it is reflected light.

This is definitely one of your strongest works; Great color palette and details. I would go further in adding more details to the snow/mountains however, as it has a great contrast to the level of detail in the fur.
