hi
Im thinking of getting a cheap laptop for animating while I go overseas for a year or so. I know messiah has issues with some cards (some may say it’s the other way around) I was just wanting to know if it runs at a reasonable pace without glitches on either the nvidia 64mb geforcefxgo 5200 agp4x or the ati 128mb mobility radeon 9600 pro turbo agp4x or the 128mb 9700 agp8x or the 256mb 9800 agp8x.

thankyou for helping me with my choice.

I do most of my work on an HP Laptop zd7000 3.2Ghz, 1G RAM, GeForce GO FX5600, 17" widescreen -
messiah works beautifully with this laptop, snappy, with no display issues to speak of. It’s actually snappier than my expensive workstation - an Alienware rig with a GeForce 6800GT (and previously a 5900) but there’s some issues with the latest and greatest. Not just with messiah, but with C4d, modo, etc… I imagine the GeForce GO FX5200 will run nicely. It seems the older GeForce cards run better with messiah. And it seems that most have had success with NVIDIA-based cards than ATI, overall - but there may be exceptions. Hope that helps.

My girlfriend has a very similar laptop as Chikega from HP with a nvidia 5600 and it runs just perfect. She does all their work on it. It was rather cheap for the power and the screensize (also 17" 16:9).
It also has a full keyboard with a separate num pad which helps a lot with 3D.

The standard nvidia 5200 was a very cheap thing that showed a lot of problems from what I have read on the lists, so I would try to test it with the demoversion if possible. Maybe the laptop flavor is better…

ATI still is a OpenGL troublemaker with messiah so it would be advised to do some test before you buy.

You can copy a messiah:animate demo installation from your machine to another harddisk without any installation and it should run. Maybe it even works directly from a CD? (never tested it)…

But if you have a chance to get a nvidia 5600 go - grab it

Good luck!

thanks for the advice

I’ve been looking at dell notebooks, but all they offer in terms of nvidia cards is the 5200, the rest are all ati. I’ve also looked at HP and Sony but they only have ati as well. so if anyone has some specific experience with the 5200go, please let me know

Albatron Geforce FX 5200 128MB AGP
Well this is a cheap card i just got it to fill in the gap of the AGP of an old
dual PIII @1Kghz

Unfortunatelly Messiah 2.1 works only with 1024x768 …and only one monitor…

But i save frequently due to crashes…

On my portable solution (a XPC Shuttle @3.2) i use an ATI X800Pro
and with the latest Catalyst drivers i experience a few crashes but can run it on
1600x1280
with the Catalyst 4.2 i havent experienced a Crash yet…

On our workstations with Quadro FX 1000 and FX500 it works fine with no crashes…

i’d try the M60 Precision from Dell if i were u and had the cash
