Gaze: Portraiture after Ingres at the Norton Simon Museum! (Free admission for students with i.d) Free parking! 12pm-6pm.

With close to 150 works culled from the Museum’s collections, Gaze: Portraiture after Ingres traces artistic engagements with the genre following Ingres’s influence in the early to mid-19th century. By displaying the portraits of Ingres’s contemporaries as well as those by Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, the exhibition examines why this type of painting, so seemingly laden with restrictions and expectations, appealed to some of the greatest avant-garde painters in the history of art. Continuing with the work of 20th-century masters such as Amedeo Modigliani, Oskar Kokoschka, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, the focus turns toward radical variations on portraiture, showing how and why, given the complete destruction of representation as early as the 1910s, these great masters returned to the genre over and again

1-Day Meditation for the Artist Seminar Sat, May 15, 2010, 10am-5pm at LAAFA!

The creative process is inherently contemplative and naturally benefits from meditation. Meditation enhances not only the creative process but also the viewing process in specific ways—it helps to synchronize mind and body, right and left hemispheres of the brain, and our intuitive and intellectual abilities. The mindfulness and awareness practices found in meditation lead us to rest in our senses so we can glimpse things as they are and enjoy genuine spontaneity and pure, unselfconscious, expression. They also dissolve creative blockages and reveal the source of creativity and inspiration. This one day seminar will teach meditation and offer specific contemplative exercises and activities such as non-objective brush and ink painting designed to further awaken your creative and viewing processes. Instructor: Steven Saitzyk. Adjunct Professor of Humanities and Design Sciences, Art Center College of Design. This crash-course will teach you the classic approach to draftsmanship and animal anatomy. If you’ve ever wondered how drawing masters can depict a horse leaping or a bear dancing without copying photographs, these three days of intense instruction will take you through the process step-by-step. You will learn how to confidently draw animals from imagination as well as to interpret what you see when drawing from real animals. Those mysterious bumps on a lion’s limbs will make sense when you know the underlying structure. Marshall will compare various types of four-legged animals with humans, always with an emphasis on how to master “form in space” so they look realistic, alive, and authoritative.

Digital Figure Painting (using Photoshop) (Starts July 29th - 10wks)
Instructor: Alex Ruiz
Thursday, 7pm-10pm

The focus of this course will be on digital life drawing and painting using Adobe Photoshop and other digital techniques. The class also explores working with brushes and digital drawing tablets (such as those from Wacom) with a live model in the room to replicate through drawing and painting the human figure as would be done in a studio environment. Gesture, form, and anatomy will also be discussed in depth.

Drawing Storyboards/Graphic Novels with Light (Starts Aug. 14th - 5wks)

Light is the element that will dramatically influence a set and the characters within. Depending on the use we make of it the perception of the image will change in order to fit the storytelling moment. In this course we will observe and ink on paper sets under different lighting conditions, in convincing and practical ways, to then apply these techniques to specific panels that will deliver the desired message to an audience.There will also be slide show, analysis and discussion of artwork examples.

Entertainment Composition (Starts Aug. 21st - 5wks)

The focus of this course is to investigate different methods of sketching and visual concept development for entertainment projects while stressing creative thinking, drawing from the imagination, and composition. Using fundamental drawing and design principles students will explore in class and at home using ink pens, pencils, markers/and or watercolors to fully realize their ideas through various exercises and small design projects including character design, environments, props and/or vehicles. In addition to interactive lectures, instruction includes demos and technical information on materials, methods, and uses of various sketching techniques and styles as they apply to entertainment design. My goal is to give students a hands-on overview of entertainment design sketching and composition that is content rich in a very interactive and open setting that allows students to participate and express their creativity using the knowledge they gain from this course. Should Have Prior Knowledge Of: Basic perspective drawing, previous figure drawing/quick sketch.

Environment Layout Design (Starts July 14th - 10wks)

This course explores the fundamentals of environment design. The class will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of what goes into designing environments including a step by step process which will culminate with the students producing environment drawings of their own. Weekly lectures and demonstrations will cover topics such as staging and composition, 1, 2, 3 and 5 point perspective, scaling characters, visual story telling, natural and artificial lighting, thumbnails and rough sketching, final line and line quality and tonal drawings. Students will be expected to work within the classroom as well as manage homework assignments.

This course will consist of painting demonstrations and lectures covering the important elements of painting the Still Life, such as value, color and edges, as well as composition and design. Long Pose Figure Sculpture(Starts Oct. 6th)
Instructor: David Simon Wednesday, 6pm-10pm

This class will focus on teaching the student to accurately represent the complexities of the human form. The use of proportional systems to funnel observation into an accurate sculptural representation of the figure will be introduced. This class will stress the synthesis of anatomical knowledge and observation. Students will learn how to correctly set up an armature and will be instructed in the proper use of modeling tools. There will be one pose for the duration of the course, and students may choose to work at either a 30” or 36” scale. Oil-based clay will be used.

Approaches to Illustration(Starts Oct. 4th)
Instructor: Douglas Kirk Monday, 7pm-10pm

The focus of this course will be on exploring the field of illustration through practical work which will seek to develop the technical and creative facility required to work in the illustration field. Understanding of the history of illustration, current technical means and contemporary trends in traditional as well as new media will be covered. The role of the illustrator in published media, and therefore the purpose of illustration will be engaged. Access to a computer and appropriate software used by illustrators will be helpful but is not essential for undertaking this course where traditional media still hold an important place. Primary stress will be placed on the student developing their own creative approaches through practical work.

Portrait Drawing: Focus on Realism with Kate Sammons
In this class, students will learn to draw the portrait in a full tonal range with an emphasis on realism and working from source reference. The syllabus includes the use of photographic reference for the purpose of training students to use rational observation when drawing. Rational observation stresses the skills of impartial analysis when judging the appearance of a subject. This class also teaches students how to use pressure variation, form modeling and rendering to improve their drawing skills.
