#2140 - Figurative Watercolor Painting
Instructor: Bill Perkins
Monday, 7pm-10pm

This class is for those artists who enjoy the challenge of painting directly with watercolor. We will progress from sketching to more finished approaches in the medium. We will work from a model and begin with 2D design and mixing clean color, to form and non-form expressions through various watercolor techniques. Though we will progress in steps for clarity, this is not a step-by-step paint like me course. My goal is to help the individual artist become more proficient in the style they choose or would like to achieve.

#2150A - Still Life Painting
Instructor: Mark Cummings
Tuesday, 11am-2pm

This still life course will introduce students to an understanding about composition, lighting, proper volume of form and color. We will be analyzing the rhythms and flows through the figure and be studying the anatomical landmarks and articulation of skeletal and muscular forms. We will also work on tonal relationships and line quality as the class progresses. Toward the end of the course, students will use a good quality, medium value paper with dark pencil and adding white highlights. In each class, we warm up with 2 to 5 min poses, progressing with 10 to 15 min and ending with 25 min poses. Samples/Demonstrations of drawings and/or paintings will be shown.

#2390A - Alla Prima Figure Painting A
Instructor: Tony Pro
Thursday, 10am-1pm

This class will cover the principles of painting the figure wet into wet in one to two sittings. Getting the essence of the likeness and making a simple statement with paint are some of the hardest things to grasp in painting and I will cover methods I use in capturing the human spirit on canvas via demonstration and individual attention. We will also cover understanding light and its different temperatures and how it affects the model. If you are passionate about learning to paint figures from life with bravura brushwork and riveting color, this class is for you. Class level is for intermediate to advanced painters, but students MUST know how to draw the human figure at an intermediate to advanced level.

Free Beginning Drawing Class March 6th Saturday, 11am-2pm at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art!

This Free Instructed Class is for people who are new to LAAFA, and have never studied with us before (one free class per person). The free drawing class will encourage you to see with your eyes and to draw with your hand. Instruction will be given in simple shading, lighting, core shadows, and learning to draw through an object. This is an excellent opportunity for students with little to no formal drawing training at all. Learning to translate what you see to paper is an exercise that will challenge you in new ways, keeping your brain and your imagination piqued. Come give it a try!

Bring your 18x24 pad of newsprint, some charcoal, a graphite pencil, a kneaded eraser, your right brain, and enjoy a class on the house. Our hope is that you realize how important art can be in your life, for without it we merely exist.

More experienced artists can also benefit from one of these classes. Bring along your work, and during the class, our instructor will take some one-on-one time with you to give you a free portfolio review. Find out where you are with your skill level, and where you can go!

He focuses on the compositions of great masters and the principles behind all successful artistic forms, principles that have been basic to composing art from the beginning. Gaze: Portraiture after Ingres at the Norton Simon Museum! (Free admission for students with i.d) Free parking! 12pm-6pm.

With close to 150 works culled from the Museum’s collections, Gaze: Portraiture after Ingres traces artistic engagements with the genre following Ingres’s influence in the early to mid-19th century. By displaying the portraits of Ingres’s contemporaries as well as those by Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, the exhibition examines why this type of painting, so seemingly laden with restrictions and expectations, appealed to some of the greatest avant-garde painters in the history of art. Continuing with the work of 20th-century masters such as Amedeo Modigliani, Oskar Kokoschka, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, the focus turns toward radical variations on portraiture, showing how and why, given the complete destruction of representation as early as the 1910s, these great masters returned to the genre over and again

Enjoy!

1-Day Meditation for the Artist Seminar Sat, May 15, 2010, 10am-5pm at LAAFA!

The creative process is inherently contemplative and naturally benefits from meditation. Meditation enhances not only the creative process but also the viewing process in specific ways—it helps to synchronize mind and body, right and left hemispheres of the brain, and our intuitive and intellectual abilities. The mindfulness and awareness practices found in meditation lead us to rest in our senses so we can glimpse things as they are and enjoy genuine spontaneity and pure, unselfconscious, expression. They also dissolve creative blockages and reveal the source of creativity and inspiration. This one day seminar will teach meditation and offer specific contemplative exercises and activities such as non-objective brush and ink painting designed to further awaken your creative and viewing processes. Instructor: Steven Saitzyk. Adjunct Professor of Humanities and Design Sciences, Art Center College of Design. International Director of Shambhala Art, a nonprofit arts education program designed to integrate meditation into the creative process. See: www.shambhalaart.org. He has completed a Buddhist Seminary and has practiced and taught meditation internationally for more than thirty years.

Animal Anatomy Workshop and Animal Drawing Class at LAAFA

#7100 – Marshall Vandruff 3-Day Animal Anatomy Workshop
Fri-Sun, Aug. 13-15, 2010, 10am-5pm

This crash-course will teach you the classic approach to draftsmanship and animal anatomy. If you’ve ever wondered how drawing masters can depict a horse leaping or a bear dancing without copying photographs, these three days of intense instruction will take you through the process step-by-step. You will learn how to confidently draw animals from imagination as well as to interpret what you see when drawing from real animals. Those mysterious bumps on a lion’s limbs will make sense when you know the underlying structure. Marshall will compare various types of four-legged animals with humans, always with an emphasis on how to master “form in space” so they look realistic, alive, and authoritative.

Quotes from Former Students:

“You are one of the most engaging, informed instructors I’ve ever experienced. I learned volumes from the Animal Anatomy course. With joy and fond appreciation…”
—Ed Eyth, Former Senior Character Designer, Henson Studios

“I had the benefit of discovering Marshall Vandruff’s teaching materials many years ago when I first set out to learn how to draw animals and fantasy creatures. Marshall was the first artist to really get me to think about drawing in three dimensions and I still refer to his work to this day! Marshall’s teaching style is so wonderfully accessible in its direct and clear approach to drawing realistic animals by thinking around the forms and seeing them as dimensional objects on the page. He manages to break down complex ideas and shapes into easy to understand and easy to reproduce forms that have stuck with me for years and continue to guide my hand to this day.”

 • Scott Spencer, Character Designer, The Weta Workshop

Open House - Holiday Art Show and Silent Auction
Save the Date - December 11, 5pm to 9pm

Please join us for holiday cheer at our Evening Winter Open House. As always, you may participate in our uninstructed figure model workshop, view demonstrations by our instructors, enjoy refreshments and partake in our Art Show and Silent Auction. This will be a great opportunity to purchase instructor and student artwork and bid on auction items such as museum passes, restaurant cards, gift baskets, and LAAFA gift certificates for your
holiday gift giving list.

15% of each piece of artwork sold and 100% of each auction item sold will go towards our non-profit (Fractured Atlas) LAAFA Scholarship Fund.
LAAFA Scholarships is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization.

*FREE DRAWING CLASS- Prior to Open House we invite students who have never taken an art class with LAAFA to join us for our FREE drawing class from 2pm to 5pm!
