keyframe pinning

#1

does anyone know if it’s possible to turn on and then turn off a Pinning effect?.. ie keyframe it.

Nope. Pinning is only used to pose your character. If you want to lock it to the world you’ll have to turn on the green balls (IK mode…)

The alternative is to create an Aux Effector on the wrist, for instance.
Make sure you actual Wrist IK is off (you can key the reach to zero) - then you key the reach of the Aux Effector over time, effectively pinning it when reach is 100% T & R. You can animate the Aux effectors’ position and orientation over time to add in subtleties.

Another way I used to do it back in the day was to create a locator. Then Parent/Child constrain (say the Wrist Effector you wish to pin) to this locator. Then key on/off the constraint the old fashioned way, so it blends into the pin and out again. I tend to put subtle motion on any pinned limb so it doesnt look like its been hammered in place.

jonmummery,
that sounds like a great approach. i’ve kind of started to do it already but not exactly like you described.
thanks for the insights… i’ll def. try it out.
